I have this and the Shelford channel. Both units each a different flavor of super high end sound quality. I purchased the Portico ii for recording the electric cello direct and the DI is superb with the bowed sound. Just the straight preamp sound is great but this unit has extremely flexible and musical eq and compression to perfect the tone and level for a specific track. I am looking forward to recording upright bass and acoustic guitar as well. The sheford is perfect for getting a thick bass guitar tone with such great harmonic content and pitch clarity. it’s really a dream sound on bass and words are inadequate to describe it. Also great for using the compressor in conjunction with the REDDI for electric guitar—killer clean sound or foundation sound with guitar pedals. You can really thicken the sound and work majic with the sustain with the shelford compressor. Both units have what seems like endless headroom and a noise floor like a black hole.
This is one of the most useful channel strips available. The EQ’s are sweepable, not fixed like on many units. Also, each band can be individually engaged or bypassed, the order of compression/EQ reverses, etc. Even without a patch panel, everything is possible. I use it primarily as a bass preamp. In that role, it excels. The clean, detailed DI significantly outperforms high-quality Jensen transformers in the most popular stage DI boxes. The pre has lots of headroom. I leave the EQ and compressor out when building tone. I get the bass sounding how I want, the add EQ and compression to taste, using the bypass switches to compare in and out. The result is bass tone that can only be described as excellent, superlative, etc. It sounds great, has flexible controls, is easy to use quickly, and makes my custom Skjold bass sound it’s best. I use it live and in the studio and it delivers in both places. At this level, there is “different “, but the combination of features and control flexibility is unique if shop quality channel strips. Rupert Neve and team have created an excellent product with the Portico II channel strip.
