Product Description

The Neumann M 50 V is a faithful reissue of the innovative omnidirectional tube microphone that defined the "hi-fi" sound of 1950s and '60s orchestral recordings. Painstakingly crafted to vintage specifications using modern materials, the M 50 V is based around a distinctive small-diaphragm omni capsule mounted in an acrylic sphere that subtly shapes its off-axis frequency response. Authentic tube circuitry and a robust output transformer deliver vintage warmth, clarity, and headroom, and the updated NM V power supply provides optimal power delivery and automatically adapts to global mains voltages. Historically used in the classic Decca tree technique, this one-of-a-kind microphone also excels in modern surround and immersive microphone arrays thanks to its unique pickup pattern and natural decorrelation effect. Includes PSU, cable, improved yoke mount, and hard-shell carrying case.

AUTHENTIC REISSUE MADE TO ORIGINAL SPECIFICATIONS

The Neumann M 50 V is handcrafted in Germany to the original specifications using archived documentation, ensuring the sonic character of the 1951 classic is preserved. From recreating the unique omni capsule design to sourcing original-spec tubes and transformers, Neumann engineers have managed to reproduce the distinctive sound and characteristics of the original model while improving reliability, ensuring compliance with modern power standards, and shielding the electronics from radio frequency (RF) interference. The result is sonically indistinguishable from the original Neumann M 50, yet more reliable enough for daily studio use.

UNIQUE OMNIDIRECTIONAL CAPSULE

At the heart of the Neumann M 50 V is the K 33 Ti capsule, a small-diaphragm omnidirectional transducer crafted with a titanium diaphragm for outstanding transient response and durability. The capsule is mounted flush inside a 40 mm spherical housing, which alters its off-axis frequency response while retaining its omnidirectional behavior at low frequencies, giving it completely different characteristics than any other omni or cardioid mic. The unique polar pattern gives on-axis sources a high-frequency lift that "highlights" them in the soundfield, while off-axis sources remain audible yet mellowed. Combining high-frequency directivity, natural midrange, and powerful bass response, the Neumann M 50 V delivers full-range sound and vivid imaging that's well suited to classical music and orchestral recording of all kinds.

CLASSIC TUBE MICROPHONE CIRCUIT

This authentic reissue retains the classic tube electronics that define its signature sound, including the same subminiature tube type and the robust BV11 output transformer used in the original models. The M 50 V's original-spec tube circuit delivers all the harmonic richness, clarity, and transient response you expect from a Neumann tube microphone, with improved headroom and reliability. The electronics are hand-soldered and assembled to ensure stable, consistent performance, and the BV11 transformer provides the necessary impedance for modern preamps and long cable runs.

THE DEFINITIVE DECCA TREE MICROPHONE

The Neumann M 50 cemented its place in recording history as the official mic of the Decca Tree, an innovative stereo configuration invented by engineers at Decca Records for capturing orchestras and large ensembles in high fidelity. Consisting of three microphones arranged in a triangular array and suspended above the conductor, the Decca Tree technique yields a well-defined stereo image with excellent mono compatibility. The M 50 V is the ideal microphone for classic Decca Tree recording as well as multi-mic immersive arrays, making it a go-to choice for strings, brass sections, drums, and film score sessions.

UPDATED POWER SUPPLY

The Neumann M 50 V ships with the new and improved NM V power supply, a modernized version of the original PSU designed for optimal power delivery, stable operation, and enhanced RF protection. On top of providing stable tube bias and clean output, the NM V automatically detects and adapts to any mains voltage, so you can use it anywhere without worrying about local power standards. An RF-proof connector design resists interference from contemporary wireless devices, and the included 33-foot KC 5 cable gives you plenty of slack for long cable runs. The set also includes the Neumann MZ 49 A yoke-style shock mount with elastic elements for rumble attenuation and a durable travel case for secure transport.
