The PSI AVAA C20 is designed to absorb the standing modes between 15 and 150 Hz in a room. It will do so just like passive absorbers but in a much more efficient way and using up much less space. Each operating AVAA will have the same effect as a hole in the wall much larger than the dimensions of the AVAA (that is 0.2 m2). The exact ratio will depend on the frequency and environment but typically range between 5 and 20.
The AVAA will affect the impedance of the air and “suck” low frequencies around it. Therefore the best position to place an AVAA is in the most rigid corners as that is where all room modes will be most present. It is important to work on the positioning of loudspeakers and listening, as the AVAA will have little effect on inevitable first reflections.
A microphone will measure the acoustic pressure in front of an acoustic resistance.
The acoustic resistance is designed to let air through but reducing significantly the pressure.
Behind the acoustic resistance, a transducer membrane is driven to absorb the volume of air going through the acoustic resistance as well as ensuring a specific acoustic impedance in front of this acoustic resistance.
When in function, this acoustic impedance in front of the acoustic resistance is significantly lower than in ambient air and therefore acts as a pressure sink. The acoustic impedance of the air is affected typically over a radius of 1 to 1.5 m around the AVAA. This explains how the AVAA can be more absorbent that its actual surface of perfect absorber.
It is designed to absorb frequencies between 15 and 150 Hz and is most effective on room modes that are the result of multiple reflections.
After reading and watching a lot of user reviews and leaning on the reputation of PSI and Vintage King, I ordered two of these. Here's my experience after using them almost daily for a few weeks: Pros 1) noticeably tighter bass, flatter measured response 2) more sonic "weight" to the fundamental frequencies in the lowest octave 3) added clarity in lower mids (less masking?) 4) significantly reduced modal resonances below 100hz (verified in-room with measurements--A-B of units powered on and off) 5) significantly reduced the strongest modes centered around 40hz (verified in-room with measurements--A-B of units powered on and off), and reach even lower down to in-room monitor cutoff (-6db) between 26 and 32 hz. 6) small footprint/easy to place in corners 7) not very heavy/portable 8) simple to operate, just power on, no calibration needed 9) not having to fuss with configuring and placing/mounting tuned membrane traps (already have extensive broad band bass trapping, not much space left for more traps) 10) silent 11) power on light clearly visible 12) do not add heat to room, cool to the touch 13) no audible artifacts, audible improvement everywhere in the room--not just sweet spot 14) *last but not least, bass translation--solved, no kidding. *important to note: these were the finishing touch of treatment in addition to an extensive amount of previous passive broadband bass trapping in the room Cons 1) expensive, perhaps into diminishing returns if more than 2 are necessary (is it more expensive to hire an acoustics consultant with custom build/treatment, or purchase a ton of manufactured passive broadband traps + 2-4 AVAAs? worth considering). 2) they occupy 2 power sockets in power strip (minus 2 outboard pieces in the rack--opportunity cost) 3) Personally I don't care for the large silver "AVAA" brand logo on them, but mostly hidden in corners of room 4) The shipping carton included a crappy power cable plug for each unit, which fit WAY too loose, almost falling out of the unit power sockets (Vintage King stepped up and shipped standard power cables free of charge which fit perfectly into the sockets). At these prices, the power cables should not have been a problem--period. 5) I experienced fairly long wait times for receiving the two products (including hassle with the power cables) 6) not an all-in-one solution--meant to be used in addition to broadband passive trapping. This isn't a con strictly speaking as they don't claim to be "all-in-one". This is more of a heads up for anyone expecting these to do the job alone. 7) silent when plugged into common power strip with other gear and computer, but ground loop buzz appeared when not plugged into the same power strip. 8) problematic to place in the back corners of the room: have to run extension cords in home studio, etc. plus grounding issue mentioned in 7). Summary Bass from the speakers feels good, measures good, and now translates outside the studio
They’re not inexpensive but I was honestly shocked at how effective these are. Tightened up a short decay time in the lowest frequencies of my room which is below 20Hz. After buying 2, I bought 2 more later so all corners were treated. Used in conjunction with traditional treatments, it can be an excellent addition.
The AVAA has transformed my listening room. Two of the devices effectively remove strong bass resonances which were inevitable in my “sweet spot” near a wall. Result is superb imaging, controlled bass, hearing deeply into the original acoustics of the recording. No other treatment was able to achieve this effect.
