Conjuring up a bygone age in both sound and appearance, the Placid Audio Copperphone is a lo-fi dynamic effects microphone that reproduces a limited bandwidth of frequencies reminiscent of a telephone or AM radio. Handcrafted in Texas from vintage telecommunications components, it achieves its nostalgic lo-fi sound by combining a mic element and mechanical filtering, accentuating upper midrange frequencies and attenuating low and high frequencies.
You can use The Copperphone as a standalone effects mic to add authentic vintage character to any voice or instrument. Or pair it with another more traditional microphone in any number of configurations, with or without processing, and blend the two signals to create something unique and interesting.
The Copperphone has been adopted by engineers, producers, and recording studios worldwide, but it’s just as effective in a live situation. In fact, company founder Mark Pirro, an engineer and bass player with Polyphonic Spree, originally designed The Copperphone for the band’s lead singer, Tim DeLaughter — so rest assured that it’s built to take the rigors of the road, too.
This lil guy is a secret weapon. Combined with my u67 or on it’s our own it’s something I’ll always have. The limited range is different than just using eq filters. There’s a vibe that’s well worth the cost.
👍🏻👍🏻
I can't stress enough how valuable this mic is for tracking vocals as an alt track. The weird clarity and bite this thing gives to recordings is fabulous. I'll use it on most rock vocal sessions and as a drum room mic. Please give thing a go. It's flipping cool.
The Placid Audio Copperphone is the perfect addition to your studio if youre looking for THE character mic. This handcrafted microphone has a lo-if quality to it. Awesome on anything you put it on. I primarily use it on vocals and guitar cabs, but Ive had great results on drums. Placid Audio has quite the lineup and the copperphone is an excellent place to start.
