Product Description

This unit is an original Neve 2074 broadcast module professionally converted to 1073 specification through the installation of vintage components and period-correct modifications. It's been recently recapped and fully serviced. Note: the BA211 component is a Shep replica, not an original Neve part.

The process of converting a vintage Neve 2074 module to 1073 specification is relatively straightforward, requiring minimal component changes. The 183/283 output card is populated, unnecessary wiring is removed and new wiring added, along with appropriate resistors and capacitors. The line trim pot is removed and replaced with a standard 1073 rotary attenuator. Most importantly, a mic input transformer is installed to complete the conversion. After these modifications, the 2074 is, for all intents and purposes, a fully functional 1073 mic pre/EQ.

Transformer complement includes all vintage original units: St. Ives L10468 mic input transformer and Marinair LI.31267 line input transformer, paired with a Marinair LO1166 output transformer — period-correct components consistent with original 1073 production. The discrete Class A gain stage features an original Motorola 2N3055 NPN transistor, with the 5.1K resistor removed as part of the conversion.

This unit is an original 2074 converted into a 1073 by the installation of a new attenuator, mic transformer, Hi/Lo switch, populating components through pins N to V on the 283 card and additional wiring. EQ and phase switches have been replaced. After the conversion is complete, the 2074 is, for all intents and purposes, a 1073 mic pre/EQ.

The Neve 1073 Microphone Preamp/3-Band EQ is a classic, discrete mic pre with 3-band EQ and hi-pass filter. Fat and pillowy low end, with the perfect midrange points and sweet 12k top end. The 1073 is legendary for its beautiful and unique sound, as demonstrated by its use in so many high-end studios, on so many famous recordings. The history of the 1073 goes back forty years, to May of 1970, when one era ended and another began. On May 8, the Beatles released their final album, Let It Be, and two days later, Rupert Neve released the original 1073 microphone preamplifier with EQ. It remains the most desirable Class A discrete transistor mic pre to this day.
