A Deeper Look At Neumann's History

  • neumann_bottom_1.jpg

The company, formerly Georg Neumann and Co., was founded in 1928 by Georg Neumann, who is considered to be the greatest microphone designer of all time. His passion for overcoming technical hurdles drove his ambitious designs, like the legendary REISZ M109 that served as the broadcasting mic of choice during the early 1920s.

The humble genius also helped pave the way for the development of electro-acoustic measuring instruments, as well as phonograph record cutting machines and rechargeable batteries. Early on, Neumann also built customized sound production units for radio studios, theaters, and concert halls.

Today, Neumann is a part of the Sennheiser Group and is headquartered in Berlin, Germany. The manufacture of their world-class microphones takes place in Wedemark, near Hannover. All components go through extensive testing with careful handicraft under very specific room conditions. The strict manufacturing criteria ensure a worthy investment that will survive generations of use. Neumann even offers to repair all of their microphones produced since World War II. There’s more than one reason Neumann microphones are used by the majority of the industry.

  • Neumann sells microphones for every application imaginable. Their collection of large diaphragm tube microphones includes a few models that are easily timeless, like the U 67. It’s a true renaissance studio recording microphone from the 1960s that defined a pivotal era of music history. Its K 67 capsule design gave birth to “the Neumann sound” and continues to support several other models. The U 67 reissue is handmade and hand-soldered to original specifications from genuine archived documents. Its three selectable polar patterns and optional low-cut filter make it suitable for all applications.

Other large diaphragm models, such as the TLM 103, are modern classics that create new standards in microphone design. The TLM 103 was originally marketed as a more affordable way to get the Neumann sound; it’s arguably one of the most necessary microphones to own. The crystal sound definition and low noise are just two characteristics that make this cardioid condenser mic a must-have. Thanks to its stunning ability to accentuate presence frequencies above ~5kHz, it’s the perfect vocal microphone; however, its well-rounded performance allows it to work well for drums, piano, or guitar too.

Neumann mics meet the demands of studio recording and broadcasting, but there are also models best suited for live sound applications. The KMS 104 is a vocal microphone for the stage with studio-grade stability. The small diaphragm condenser has a high SPL and high feedback resistance, bringing a little more life to treble frequencies. It’s both rugged and reliable. The sibling model, the KMS 105, features a supercardioid pattern for extreme feedback rejection and shares all the appropriate stage specs of the KMS 104. Neumann also makes programmable digital variations of these models (KMS 104 D / KMS 105 D) with built-in peak limiter/compressors and extended dynamic range.

  • The name Neumann carries a lot of weight in the industry. Aside from microphones, the brand has a professional line of studio monitors and low-end extension systems that are equally versatile to its broad lineup of respected microphones. All Neumann studio monitoring systems are designed around a common philosophy in mind: every component serves a purpose. The KH 120 is the cornerstone of their lineup of precision-tuned nearfield studio monitors. Like many other models in the collection, it delivers a clean transient response. The low end of the spectrum dips to a comfortable 52Hz, eliminating the need for a subwoofer; however, if the need arises, Newmann recommends adding their most recent sub model: the KH 750 DSP.

Neumann understands the importance of having multiple monitoring sources to reference stereo information accurately, which is why they introduced the NDH 20 studio headphones. The closed-back reference headphone paints a well-balanced picture of the stereo image. The NDH 20 is the first set of studio headphones made by Neumann. In fact, the new design was honored with the TEC Award in the Headphone/Earpiece Technology category at NAAM. Its astonishing sound quality and dependability shadows Neumann’s studio monitors and provides plenty of ear comfort for long mixing sessions.

Neumann’s rich history continues to inspire professionals and audiophiles in the present industry. Vintage King is proud to help customers navigate the current stock of quality Neumann products and accessories.
