The Neumann TLM 49 is an award-winning large diaphragm condenser mic that captures the sound of the brand’s classic U 47 and M 49 tube condensers in a modern design. Equipped with a transformerless solid state circuit capable of recreating tube sound characteristics with stunning realism, the Neumann TLM 49 is optimized for a classic, silky vocal sound.
Classic tube microphones sound amazing, but ask any engineer working in a professional studio and they’ll tell you vintage mics aren’t without their drawbacks. In addition to astronomical price tags, vintage originals often require maintenance, causing these beloved mics to attract dust on the shelves as collector’s items. Thankfully, the TLM 49 combines the sonic charm of Neumann’s legendary U 47 and M 49 microphones with the convenience and high reliability of FET circuitry. Designed to deliver a smooth sound for vocals and acoustic instruments, the TLM 49 is ideal for both home and professional studios.

Thankfully, the TLM 49, like the Neumann TLM 103 or TLM 102, combines the sonic charm of Neumann’s legendary U 47 and M 49 microphones with the convenience and high reliability of FET circuitry. Designed to deliver a smooth sound for vocals and acoustic instruments, the TLM 49 is ideal for voiceovers and vocals during any pro audio recording session.
As suggested by the model number, the TLM 49 is inspired by the legendary Neumann M 49. Known as the vocal mic of choice for Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, and more, the M 49 was used on countless jazz and pop recordings of the 1950s and 60s. The TLM 49 uses the same open headgrill and K 47 capsule design as the original M 49.
However, instead of using clunky electron tubes like the original M 49, the TLM 49’s head amplifier uses reliable transformerless solid state technology. Featuring a special sound design that closely reproduces the sonics of tube circuits, the TLM 49 produces soft saturation at high SPLs to simulate the response of vintage tubes. In addition, the TLM 49 mic is mounted with a rubber shock mount.
Equipped with a fixed cardioid polar pattern and a sensitivity of just 13 mV/Pa, the TLM 49 excels at recording intimate vocal and acoustic performances. However, the TLM 49 studio microphone also features a clear bass, superb midrange, and a gentle presence boost above 2 kHz, allowing it to shine in almost any application.
