Solid state multipattern small diaphragm condenser mic. Cardioid, omni and figure 8.
For all practical purposes, the KM88 is a solid-state version of the KM56. The mic uses a pair of small-diameter nickel capsules mounted back-to-back with a gap between them. This gap increases the time differential between the low-frequencies arriving at the two membranes. The output circuit incorporates the BV-107 transformer found in the other famous members of the KM8x series: KM 83, KM 84, and KM 85.
