I'm a professional piano tuner, and I used these mics to pick up the sound of the piano while wearing headphones and using limiters and compressors to protect my hearing. I tried many different pencil mics, but I wanted the ultimate clarity in sound. There are other excellent mics, but nothing has come close to the KM183's. Every other mic I tried sounded like they had a veil, either coloring the sound or just lacking the clarity I could hear with my ears alone. These are not budget-breaker mics either. For what you get, these are a true bargain. The bass response is the best of all of the Neumann KM series. Nice rounded bass really evens out the overall sound. Yes, there is some boost in the high frequency range, but these are not at all tinny or harsh sounding. If you want that "vintage" KM 83 sound, well, get ready to pay over $5k a pair of used ones. EQ them if you want, but out of the box they are well balanced and give you the "presence" you need for just about anything you want to record. I have since sold them to my friend who owns a Fazioli 310, a ten foot concert grand piano, for recording the piano in his home studio.
