Designed and built in Los Angeles, the Meris Mercury7 is the first 500 Series algorithmic DSP reverb module. While it offers a range of effects from standard to otherworldly, Mercury7 was inspired by the sounds of the Lexicon 224 that many of us know from Vangelis’ 1982 Bladerunner soundtrack. Maintaining a little mystique for those who enjoy exploring effects, the module has conventional pots and no LCD displays.
Contained within its small form factor are two unique algorithms. Ultraplate expands on the quick reflection buildup and response of a traditional plate by adding a broad range of plate sizes. Cathedra enables you to remold and shape a signal according to a large-sounding environment with a slower build up – use it for creating ethereal soundscape textures.
Both channels can be run through an inventive modulation engine that offers familiar parameters, like Space Decay, and also trippy ones like Vibrato, Pitch Vector, and Swell that will find fans among sound designers as well as those who want their guitars to sound like Daniel Lanois. And this broad applicability is deliberate; the Mercury7 reverb module, like other Meris gear, is a sound design tool that is intended to be used as an instrument in its own right, in live performance as well as in the studio.
Meris have offered the Mercury7 as a mono module so that its effects can be scaled more massively and flexibly — link two to create true stereo ambience.

A few weeks back, we posted a new VK Shootout featuring a vintage EMT 140 plate reverb going up against some popular emulations. People were digging the shootout so much that we decided to do another blog that expands on other ways to get plate reverb sounds in the studio and during live performances.
Since the release of the original EMT 140, the options for getting plate reverb sounds have gotten way smaller. Sure... Being smaller than a 600-pound metal structure isn't super hard, but we're talking much smaller, like nearly as small as the palm of your hand. Continue reading →
The 500 Series format consists of a whole slew of different signal processing modules in a compact rack unit. Mic preamps, equalizers, compressors, DI boxes, filters, effects... You name it, you can find it in a 500 Series version from a wide variety of manufacturers. Most of those manufacturers participate in the VPR Alliance, established to set standards for the format to ensure that the end user can rely on consistent specifications with regard to voltage, current draw, size, etc. along with proper compatibility with existing modules. The essence of this idea is to make it simple for the user to mix and match modules from different makers, thus allowing for the broadest range of implementation for their products. Nestled in among the other small one-level buildings in the sleepy beachside streets of Ventura, California, sits an unassuming old storefront. The sun-baked exterior and paper-lined windows offer a distinct contrast to what lay inside, the brain trust of one of the world's exciting pedal makers, Meris.
Unboxing a Meris pedal or 500 Series module is an experience unlike any other. This is thanks in part to Engineer/Founder Terry Burton, DSP Engineer/VP Angelo Mazzocco, and Creative Director Jinna Kim. Each aspect of the brand's products, whether it be packaging and artwork or design and function, offer up a connective aesthetic and sound that is distinctly their own. Continue reading →

This was my first experience buying something from Vintage King (although I surf the "used" categories on the website frequently!), and, despite being on the other side of the world, I had absolutely no trouble and everything went very smoothly.
