Malekko collaborated with Justin Meldal-Johnsen, and the result is the Malekko Diabolik fuzz pedal. Based on their B:ASSMASTER circuit, the Diabolik features a preset harmonic spectrum setting allowing crisp octave overtones and a very aggressive tone setting. Working with Justin, they tuned the low frequency to allow more low end to pass through both the CLEAN and FUZZ channels. The result - very heavy!
Word on the Street:
“Its dead-simple controls make it easy to dial in refined or extreme fuzz tones. Guitarists will also find this pedal very useful for it’s clean boost functions with added fuzz or by stacking it with other drive sources for all-new mangled fuzz distortion sounds. Looking for the best bass fuzz pedal for guitar? The Malekko Diabolik JMJ deserves an audition.”
Best Guitar Effects
I wasn’t a big fan of fuzz pedals due to the inherent mid scope of these types of effects. However, the Diabolic will NOT get lost in the mix. It can put your bass right out front. The first time I used it in a band context my band mates loved it. There is A LOT of volume on tap. And the separate volume and fuzz controls are essential in keeping the dry bass tone in the mix. I will sometimes use the Diabolic with a Boss OC-2 with octave 1 cranked, octave 2 and direct levels to taste. With the upper harmonics from the Diabolic and the OC-2 with these settings, I can get a tasty bit crusher/synth-like textured sound and really make some noises! Again, the volume levels can be a bit touchy (my fuzz level is 8:30, clean ~ 9:00, and squish at 8:30) but at least you have the ability to really boost for solos. You do have to be careful and not over power the input of your next pedal in line or amp input. Overall, excellent fuzz pedal with sweet upper harmonics, especially when playing above the 12th fret and with an octave divider like the OC-2.
Ridiculous fun. My wife says it's the prettiest pedal I have too.
