Based on the acclaimed EQ4M mastering equalizer, the Maag Audio EQ4-500 introduces key enhancements. The front panel features bold new labeling and an updated visual layout with an iconic Maag Audio blue faceplate, designed to improve visibility in studio environments. Increased spacing between the frequency knobs improves ergonomics, allowing for easier and more precise control, especially during fast-paced sessions. The module also includes a true hardwire bypass circuit, identical to the one found in the EQ4M, ensuring complete signal transparency when the EQ is disengaged.
Like the 1U standalone EQ4M, the EQ4-500 includes six EQ band sections: four fixed-frequency bell-shaped peaking bands, a 2.5 kHz shelving band, and the renowned Air Band, with selectable frequencies at Off, 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 40 kHz. The five main frequency bands (Sub at 10 Hz, 40 Hz, 160 Hz, 650 Hz, and 2.5 kHz) offer up to ±15 dB of boost and as much as -4.5 dB of cut, with center detents at 0 dB for quick recall. The Air Gain control provides up to +20 dB of boost in the high-frequency shelf.
Additional features include a green signal-present LED that activates at -20 dBu and a red peak LED that illuminates at +23 dBu. An In/Out bypass switch allows easy engagement or disengagement of the entire EQ section. Whether you’re tracking or mixing, the EQ4-500 delivers smooth, musical equalization with unmatched clarity—especially when shaping the top end using Maag’s Air Band. With thoughtful updates and proven sonic performance, the EQ4-500 is the ultimate equalizer for any 500VPR rack owner and a reliable tool for enhancing everything from individual tracks to full mixes.
I have tried a good amount of high end EQs (DW Fearn, Cranesong) so I wasn't exactly expecting anything special from the EQ4. Boy was I wrong, I have had it for about a year and I know I can't be without it. Air Brand is fantastic on vocals recorded on darker mics, it gives it a touch of polish that is tricky to get with plugins. It makes ribbon mics sound open and airy in such a musical way. I also own the UAD plug-in version, which by the way is fantastic but doesn't sound as effortless as the hardware. It's definitely a great investment for professional engineers.
Love the Maag on vocals especially. The hardware is night and day from the software plug ins and so much better. Controls are stepped so recall is very easy. Love it so much I got a second one!
So far, this is as great as expected. Sounds great in my vocal chain! The air is everything I expected.
Kept reaching for the plugin on tracks, stems, and masters... Then wised up and bought the real thing! Couldn't be happier with the results and a huge shoutout to Vintage King for making this purchase possible. :-)
The one device in life besides Burl converters you cannot live without.
Two words...Air band
Very musical and useful EQ.
MAAG is known pretty much worldwide for their famous air band. Why? Because you keep turning it up more and more and it just keeps sounding better. I use it on every vocal and will usually print through it so that I can use it again on guitars or keys in the mix. Saving up to buy a few more channels!
