The TipTop Audio Resonator module is easy to use and has a dramatic effect on incoming audio. This type of effect is best known for processing polyphonic sounds and this design is inspired by the resonator of the vintage PolyMoog synthesizer. The Resonator, as the name implies, is a bank of analog filters that resonate/oscillate at a set frequency. As they resonate at those peak frequencies, they add gain to the original signal. The gain can be substantial and may cause clipping noise. Therefore, the module has a master input gain knob (VOL-IN), a gain knob for each filter bank (GAIN), and a master output gain knob to boost or reduce the output (VOL-OUT). The trick to achieving a great sound is finding a good balance between all these gain settings.
Each of the three filters has an emphasis knob (EMPH) that controls how much feedback is applied. This functions similarly to resonance on standard filters. Each filter also has a frequency knob (FREQ) that sets the cutoff frequency, much like the cutoff control on traditional filters. Additionally, each filter can be set to one of three modes: low-pass (LP), band-pass (BP), or high-pass (HP), allowing for a wide range of tonal variations.
Gain, Frequency, and Emphasis are all voltage-controlled. Modulating the frequency with smooth, slow filter sweeps is very pleasing. The bypass switch allows you to compare the dry input signal with the processed sound of the Resonator. It also enables you to keep the module in your signal chain and activate it only when needed.
