Before you start purchasing a collection of modular units, you want to first find the right frame to house all of them. Your Eurorack case will be the foundation of your Eurorack modular synthesizer, and various cases offer different power conditions and extra functions.

The size of the case is the most important thing to consider when starting your modular synth build. Eurorack modules and cases are measured in HP, or horizontal pitch. You want to make sure your Eurorack case can support the number of modules you plan to put in, if the HP of all your modules expand beyond your Eurorack case, you will either have to compromise on the modules you are using, or add an additional case.

As you begin to expand the Eurorack and move beyond one case, you will probably begin stacking the cases to save space and for ease of functionality. Something to consider before doing the initial Eurorack build is how you plan to expand beyond the initial case you choose, you’ll want to make sure that the next case you plan to purchase can easily be mounted on top of the current case you are using, or fit horizontally on the workstation you are using.

If you don’t mind having a half empty case when you first begin the build, you can look into a stacked angled case such as the Elite Modular 416 Studio Eurorack case, or Elite Modular 900. Both cases offer a large amount of HP neatly broken into vertically stacked rows, they also include internal power bricks that will be able to handle just about any combinations of modules you choose to install. If the modules expand beyond the internal power supply, an external PSU can be added to provide additional power or higher voltage output for larger modules.

Some Eurorack cases can have a keybed pre-installed. They come equipped with empty racks that allow you to customize the modules installed. Internal power supplies are also included to power all the modules you choose.
