Focal began as a small precision mechanics company in France, focusing on manufacturing speaker drivers. The first hit model, Focal’s DB 13, revolutionized the world of bookshelf loudspeakers in the mid-80s. The name had become synonymous with the French acoustic market and steadily began receiving international acclaim. In 2002, Focal released its first set of studio monitors as the company gained an even stronger foothold worldwide.
The Focal sound strikes a clean balance between bass, mid-range, and treble frequencies while maintaining dynamic character. Neutral, unfiltered sound is prioritized to allow original music to remain true. Sound elements (bass, guitar, vocals, drums) retain their respective placements in the stereo field. Above all, Focal believes that good sound can’t be taught or directly obtained; it’s discovered through experience. Focal monitoring systems are one of the most trusted ways to experience sound as it is truly intended.
Focal’s collaborative team of designers and engineers focus on ways to make aesthetic qualities work in conjunction with overall performance. The materials and components must agree with bounds of physical acoustics, yet remain visually appealing. Every model is built for consistent performance per its intended room size and application, but Focal monitors allow the original sound to remain true across multiple listening environments as well. Experiencing sound is an emotional experience that’s considered during every step of the design process.
During the early stages of development, Focal studio monitors are built to produce original sound without distortion. Certain technologies, such as dome beryllium and aluminium/magnesium tweeters, are equally important to the enclosures that house them. Their cabinet-making facility in Bourbon-Lancy, Burgundy houses a team of craftsmen who make the enclosures for Focal’s hi-fidelity professional loudspeakers. Other special manufacturing processes are outsourced to carefully selected partners who meet specific criteria that align with Focal’s vision. The combination of these manufacturing strategies ensures ultimate quality control. Because of this, customers are guaranteed the best sound reproduction available.
The crown of the professional series of studio loudspeakers is the Focal SM9. It’s fitted with a beryllium dome tweeter for accurate wave propagation and reproduction of treble frequencies. Beryllium, a common material used by Focal, is used for its extreme rigidity, which is seven times as rigid as aluminum and titanium. The composite woofer delivers tight, controlled bass frequencies.
Focal's Shape series are innovative nearfield monitors that provide mid-sized rooms with precise stereo image and acoustic transparency. Equalization is remarkably easy to manage, thanks to the neutral balance between all registers. The brand's Alpha series is also a great solution for affordable monitoring with unmistakable quality.
The SM6 line from Focal is made up of four monitors and a subwoofer that offer neutrality, clarity, and precision. These monitors are versatile near field and midfield options for music production, post-production, and broadcast that come replete with Focus mode. This enables a two-way mode on the monitors that allows you to check the quality of a mix for playback systems with limited frequency response.
To get more from Focal, turn to their reference headphones. The two main models, the Clear Professional and Listen Professional, combine sophisticated technology with comfort. Like Focal speakers, both sets of reference headphones are tuned for precise stereo imaging. In fact, the experience is strikingly similar to listening to studio monitors. Focal studio headphones are a great secondary solution for getting another perspective on every detail in the mix.
