The Rupert Neve Designs Shelford Channel represents the best of Rupert Neve's legendary console design in one do-everything channel strip. Combining a genuine Rupert Neve-designed transformer-gain mic preamp with a vintage-style Inductor EQ, a musical diode-bridge compressor, innovative dual-tap output stage, and variable Silk saturation circuit, this all-in-one unit enhances any signal that passes through it.
The front-end of the Shelford Channel boasts a Class A transformer-gain microphone preamp designed by Rupert Neve himself, plus a direct input for high-impedance instruments. The transformer-gain mic pre utilizes an RN4012 custom-designed input transformer coupled with Class A circuitry, offering excellent isolation and maintaining a remarkably low noise floor. The Shelford Channel's preamp and input transformer deliver bold, clear sound with robust low-end that flatters any instrument or vocal.
The Shelford Channel’s three-band inductor EQ section includes circuitry derived from timeless Rupert Neve EQ designs. The low-frequency band, reminiscent of the revered 1064, provides a creamy and resonant bass response, and can be used in peak or shelf modes. The semi-parametric midrange band draws from the warmth of the classic 1073 and features a HI Q switch for more precise curves. The high-frequency band of the Shelford Channel blends vintage and modern circuit design, offering smooth top-end with switchable peak and shelf settings.
The Rupert Neve Designs Shelford Channel features a diode-bridge compressor with a dynamic, “in your face” character. With full side-chain functionality, optional high-pass filter, stereo linking, and a Blend control for parallel compression, the Shelford Channel's one-of-a-kind compressor can handle anything you throw at it.
For added versatility, the Shelford Channel is equipped with a state-of-the-art dual-tap output transformer output based on the acclaimed RN2042 square-core transformer topology. With twice the operating voltage of traditional designs, this custom transformer output stage delivers both high-headroom and low-headroom options. The high-headroom tap provides a -6 dB output for pristine clarity even at peak levels, while the low-headroom tap gives you more harmonic saturation when you want an edgier tone.
Like other Shelford Series gear, the Rupert Neve Designs Shelford Channel features Silk Red and Blue saturation options with a variable Texture control that allows you to enhance your sound with second- and third-order harmonics. Silk Red mode accentuates high-frequency detail for a sizzling sound that cuts through the mix, while Silk Blue mode emphasizes the body and warmth of lower frequencies. The continuously variable Texture control adjusts the intensity of the Silk harmonics, so you can dial in the exact amount of rich, analog character you need to make any track jump out of the speakers.
Instantly improved the quality of my recordings. Everything I had hoped it would be! If you’re thinking about it and it’s in the budget, buy one, better yet, buy two like I did!
Not a jack of all trades but rather a master... This thing makes any and everything sound terrific! The clarity and harmonic richness is obvious from the first time you put a signal through it, and since it has the Neve Direct Interface built in, even those signals are vastly better than competitors DI boxes. I have two of these and you will want two as well!
The Shelford channel is a quality piece of gear, basically the "lifetime achievement award" for Rupert Neve with all the best parts in one unit. It can do everything except make you worthy.
Absolutely amazing! Truly everything I expected it to be. My only issue with it was the knobs are very wobbly which doesn’t sit well with me for such an expensive piece of gear. It doesn’t inspire confidence 😰
It's smooth and silky - but the red silk gives you a little touch of grit without being overly aggressive, which I find quite tasteful for my style. I'll likely end up getting at least one more of these in the future
When I could finally afford to upgrade my vocal game, the first thing I reached for was a pair of Neve Shelford Channels. They can sound pristine, they can sound colored, they are first in line during any recording.
I couldn't be more pleased with my Shelford Channel. I don't know what magic goes into the build of this amazing unit, but I can say that it seems I can't make this thing sound anything but complimentary to what I put into it. I feel that, between my Manley mic and this Rupert Neve channel strip I've discovered my special sauce.
All you’ll need
