With unique compression curves, three distinct distortion settings, British Mode, and stereo image linking, this versatile compressor has earned its place in the racks of top studios worldwide. Whether used subtly to enhance warmth or pushed to its aggressive limits, this improved version of the classic Empirical Labs EL8 distressor compressor offers unmatched flexibility for tracking, mixing, and mastering.
The Empirical Labs EL8X compressor features eight selectable compression curves, each designed to offer a distinct sonic character. From transparent leveling to extreme peak limiting, these eight unique curves alter the behavior of the detector path, allowing engineers to shape dynamics with precision. The 10:1 opto compressor setting uses separate detector circuitry to emulate vintage light-controlled optical compressors, delivering smooth musical response. On the other side of the spectrum, Empirical Labs' signature Nuke mode provides explosive limiting for high-energy drum processing. The unique curves of the Empirical Labs EL8X make it possible to emulate the dynamic response of countless classic compressors.
For added harmonic coloration, the Empirical Labs EL8X compressor offers an advanced distortion circuit with three unique distortion profiles: Distort 1, Distort 2, and Distort 3. Distort 1 introduces subtle harmonic enhancement without altering the dynamics or frequency response too much, Distort 2 mimics the warmth of Class A tube saturation, and Distort 3 replicates the character of magnetic tape saturation. Empirical Labs' unique control settings make it easy to add vintage-style coloration while maintaining clarity and punch.
Inspired by the famous "all-buttons-in" trick of the 1176 limiter, the Empirical Labs EL8X's British Mode delivers fast, aggressive compression with a distinct knee and envelope shape. British mode enhances transients and adds energy to drums, vocals, and instruments, making it ideal for achieving a punchy, in-your-face sound. With unique compression characteristics and a nearly brick wall limiting curve, the Empirical Labs EL8 X compressor's British Mode is the perfect tool for smashing tracks into oblivion or blending with the dry signal for tasteful parallel compression.
Designed for stereo applications, the Empirical Labs EL8-X's stereo image link function ensures seamless compression across both channels while maintaining an accurate stereo image. An absolutely essential tool for my recording studio. No plugin (not even the UAD-2 nor Slate emulation) does what makes this special. I'd tell you what that is but it's a trade secret lol.
I really love the distressor it’s very versatile and transparent
I want to give it five stars ! I really do. The only reason I can’t is because I honestly don’t think I’m qualified with enough experience to award “blue ribbon” status. Consider my above statements as a disclaimer. I like this unit so much, I ordered a second. Tracking vocals and my acoustic guitar with a Neve SPX 1073 with the Distressor in the insert path, gives me a whole lot of flexibility. The Distressor being used as a “limiter” does what I would expect it to. The availability of the “distortion” parameters of this unit is a definite plus. It doesn’t sound artificial or contrived (to my ears) in any way. This is a very usable feature set ! I am very much looking forward to having a pair of these and this latest incarnation of the EL8X being “linkable” for stereo applications is a plus for me. Regardless of how many “stars” I give this thing, I can readily declare that I have zero buyers remorse. Having a pair of these, seems like a darn good investment in craft work tools. I do indeed think that the often declared description of Distressor being the “Swiss army knife” of compressors is an apt description. I highly recommend this product ! Be forewarned that if you buy one of these, I do indeed think that you will desire a pair of them !
If you are having a hard time picking a specific compresor; Fet vs. Opto vs. VCA.. grab a Distressor - this is the Swiss Army knife of compressors, a literal Chamelean that can give you all of the above. From Gentle to Agressive this compressor gives you it all and that is why it has become a staple in studios today. (Don't forget the harmonics and the NUKE button - fun for days!!!!)
