The DW Fearn preamp is by far the best I've ever used, much less owned. There's nothing like it. The dynamic range and openess of this preamp - because of the harmonic soft clipping of the tubes is unique. The sound has a mojo but it not a specific stamp like a Neve or API. It more like it just makes any mic bigger, clearer and smoother. This preamp is like getting a whole new mic cabinet. Everything from a 57 to a 47 is different and better. A U87ai loses the harshness on the top end and becomes so much more useful. i know its expensive but you'll never record a vocal on anything else once you have it. I also happen to live in the town in Pennsylvania where the Hazelrigg Brother make every piece by hand, check every tube. I know Doug. Ive had his preamps for 10 years. Doug is a genius, and his preamp is the very best design. He spec'd the custom wound transformers. It's a unique experience. I'll never sell mine.
