More on the Way
The Buchla Ziggy analog desktop synthesizer is built around the iconic Buchla "complex oscillator," reimagined for a modern, unpatched workflow. It offers a fast, gestural approach to assigning modulation and composing music, blending digital control with analog sound generation. True to Buchla philosophy, Ziggy emphasizes the creation of a complete musical instrument rather than a traditional synthesizer, with additive synthesis, musical interactions, and deeply expressive control at its core.
Ziggy modernizes and streamlines a classic Buchla approach to sound design—often associated with the "West Coast" style of synthesis. It functions as a standalone instrument capable of crafting sequences and evolving textures from its unique control layout. While it pairs seamlessly with controllers like the Buchla LEM218, it also integrates easily with third-party gear and DAWs via MIDI, USB, and 1V/octave CV.
At its heart, Ziggy’s oscillators and low-pass gate are fully analog, delivering rich and organic sound. Digital control enhances these elements, enabling preset storage, recall, and complex modulation possibilities. A built-in digital effects engine further shapes the output with reverbs, delays, distortions, and more, giving your sound depth and dimension.
Ziggy introduces multiple innovative modulation sources for shaping sound both internally and externally. The Cycler acts as a hybrid of clock, envelope, LFO, and random generator, allowing dynamic control over pitch, timbre, and gate triggering. Additional modulation includes a slow LFO and MIDI control, all assigned without patch cables—using intuitive switches, encoders, and sliders. The modulation oscillator operates at both audio and low frequencies for AM and FM synthesis, while the low-pass gate envelope focuses on expressive shaping rather than traditional ADSR parameters.
Designed for immediacy, Ziggy makes sound design and composition fluid and tactile. Modulation assignments are performed through simple gestures, such as holding buttons and moving sliders. Built-in uncertainty and chaotic modulation sources introduce variation and surprise, while glowing LEDs provide clear visual feedback. Presets can be saved instantly, and pitch controls can be quantized to scales for melodic playability.
With dual analog oscillators, wavefolding, multiple modulation sources, and flexible tuning systems, Ziggy produces a wide range of sounds. While rooted in experimental synthesis, it is equally capable of creating musical tones—lush strings, punchy drums, expressive leads, percussive plucks, and deep basses. Alternative tunings and scales further expand its creative range.
Ziggy’s compact, patch-free design makes it ideal for small studio setups. It runs on USB-C power and offers extensive MIDI connectivity for easy integration into modern workflows. Its durable oak and steel enclosure reflects Buchla’s signature aesthetic, while onboard menus and a browser-based editor provide convenient configuration and firmware updates.
