The Ex Machina Pulsar 3-Way Active Studio Monitor may be the smaller of the brand's two current offerings, but the monitor will excel in studio set-ups of all types. Whether using the Pulsar in nearfield and midfield position in larger control rooms or as the main monitor resource in a smaller space, Ex Machina has created listening tools that you can depend on for critical accuracy.
A key ingredient to the success of the Pulsar is the cabinet construction that Ex Machina employs. These sealed, highly braced cabinets are built with thick Valchromat, which helps to stop group delay and turbulence. The material is known for being far superior for acoustic enclosures, preferred by many over MDF and plywood.
The midrange speaker housed in the upper portion of the Pulsar is made from an extremely lightweight, yet stiff material called TeXtreme. Due to the material's makeup, Ex Machina has been able to create a cone that works perfectly in tandem with a free-standing tweeter, a first in monitor design. While many designers go for aluminum tweeters, the Pulsar employs a material called GrapheneQ, which has a better stiffness to weight ratio that makes for a super-wide sweet spot.
For those essential low end sounds, Ex Machina has teamed with SEAS for an exclusive 22cm subwoofer with large magnets, voice coils and symmetrical suspension. The subwoofer's aluminum alloy diaphragms allow for a 28mm of linear peak to peak excursion and can be pushed to 56mm before being damaged. All of these features add up to the Pulsar being able to push out powerful low frequencies with the speed and accuracy needed to make split second decisions in the studio.
In terms of power and processing, the Pulsar comes well equipped. The monitor employs Class D amplifiers from Second Generation Hypex Ncore, which efficiently drive the entire range with excepteptional linear power. You can expect extremely low distortion and low output impedance. Ex Machina also uses one SHARC DSP for each loudspeaker to power its digital crossovers and protection limiters, in addition to AKM Velvet Sound converters and a low jitter clock for smooth conversion.
What makes everything inside the Pulsar work in harmony? Ex Machina has incorporated a serial number specific set of measurements for each monitor that the brand creates. When a monitor has been finished and is preparing to be shipped, it goes through an in-house calibration process that linearizes the unit's frequency response and phase response. This means that each monitor created by Ex Machina matches exactly with every other monitor the brand has created.
The Ex Machina’s are spectacular. I am a composer of TV and film music. (I write, mix and deliver several pieces a day) To me, the Pulsars are the perfect speaker in which to write. I’ve literally re-visited all of my plugins and synths and have wondered how I didn’t hear so much for so long. These are in the rare combination of accurate PLUS inspirational. They have the best low end from any speaker I’ve heard, there’s something very “correct” feeling about the bass, which makes for bold decisions. The midrange is wide and tall; midrange translation beyond perfection. Originally I thought these would be too large for my room, but they correct by saying that they are coherent and the sweet spot is wide even at closer distances. There’s definitely no need for an additional subwoofer. (I’m running mine on 1/4 space; room is 12x16) I might add that these are fantastic for styles of music that are low-end focused, but magically also sound incredible when I’m composing “classical” underscore. Bottom line : I feel like I’ve found a powerful companion for inspiration, and mixes are translating better than ever.
