The Electro Voice 635A is a handheld interview microphone designed for exacting professional applications such as film production, recording, broadcasting, and the more demanding PA applications. The EV 635A mic has high output level, low sensitivity to mechanical shock, and features a diaphragm which permits very smooth response over a wide frequency range. The diaphragm withstands humidity and temperature extremes, corrosive effects of salt air, and severe mechanical shocks. It is practically indestructible with normal use. A four-stage pop and dust filter ensures a completely pop-free performance and virtually eliminates the need for an external windscreen during outdoor use. An internal shock absorber effectively reduces the pickup of cable and other noise generated by external contact.

This microphone is as stated practically indestructible, l found a EV 635 microphone that had been forgotten left out in the open on the roof of a sporting stadium for over three years. I plugged it in to a console mic channel and it just worked, now that's reliability right there.

Great mic.
As recommended I use this mic in a ‘crotch’ position on the drums. Picks up a nice blend of attack from the kick plus snare drum. Should work well for a distortion or compression to blend in with the overall sound of the drums. I have also tried it as a mono OH which works well too in addition to my spaced pair OH.
Almost as useful as an SM7. And that's pretty damn useful. The 635A is a desert island mic. Every studio should have 3 or 4 in the locker.
This is a really cool mic, it’s great for vocals/background vocals if you’re looking for something with a retro feel or not so hi-fi. Also like this on acoustic guitar and/on amps, you can get right up on the source and not have to worry about it getting too boomy as it's an omni. For the price, everyone should have one.
