Adding a dbx 266xs Compressor/Limiter/Gate to your live sound rig or studio gives you more dynamic control to help create a more polished, professional sound. Having compression in your audio chain gives you the ability to smooth out uneven levels, add sustain to guitars and fatten up your drums. It also makes it easy to bring vocals to the front of your mix - adding greater clarity and making them stand out from the surrounding instruments.
dbx knows compressors...after all we invented them! The 266xs is the latest in a long line of the world's most successful compressors from the inventors of the technology. Its patented Overeasy® compression technology provides smooth and musical performance while the AutoDynamic™ attack and release controls, found only on dbx compressors, puts great sound within easy reach. The 266xs can operate in stereo or dual-mono modes, has true RMS power summing and features quality XLR and 1/4" TRS inputs and outputs. It cuts no corners on visual feedback with gain reduction metering and easy-to-read backlit switches.

I think this is pretty tough to beat for a compressor/gate and there are some similar models in the same price range, yet this is a pretty good compressor/gate and for finalizing. I am using it as a compressor and for live recording at times and for bringing some sounds closer together. In particular, a live mix being combined with a recorded tracks such as karaoke. In that, I am doing both front compression and average compression to bring the equalization and the levels closer together and to also smooth out the vocal track. I think it works well for the price of this piece of equipment. I think this works very good and again I use it to compress initially then to do some very small compression several times in order to bring the sound levels closer and more like the radio. I think it works really quite good that way and again I think this is a good product with a good price. I prefer to hookup both before and after the mixer using both some pre and post compression to smooth the levels. I am not sure what some others found, but using hardware compressors like this I think you need to have at least three of them and so either 1 or 2 up front (before mixer) and 1 or 2 post (after mixer) and I think that again it works really quite good that way, it's just you need to have like 3 or 4 compressors for such a thing.
