Description

The Critter & Guitari Organelle digital synthesizer was created for playfulness, portability and community collaboration. Designed in Brooklyn, its physical form is an aluminum box with wood buttons that speaks to the tactile analog lover, yet its functionality is very digital and conceptual, even radical, for it can be made to sound like any instrument.

Organelle is powered by a computer that runs patches made in the open source program Pure Data. You can load your own patches from a USB drive, and there are more and more new ones to choose from all the time in the Organelle Patch Repository, where users can share the patches they’ve created. Those who are already proficient at using Pure Data may have an extra advantage because they’ll be best able to create original content for themselves, yet non-programmers will also love it for how it can be mapped to reflect a specific aesthetic and functionality (called a synthesizer, some use it mostly as a sequencer or drum machine).

Because Organelle is a computer in its own right, you can connect it to an HDMI monitor and USB keyboard/mouse to work directly on its simple desktop environment. Adding to its portability is its built-in speaker and its ability to run on batteries.

Organelle can integrate an external sound source for processing, and some enjoy using it for its ability to make a sound warmer and more lo-fi without a lot of effects.
