The Cliff Mics RM1 is an active ribbon microphone designed to capture the qualities of the RCA 44 while improving on its performance. Its topology is that of a passive ribbon plus onboard amplifier.
The ribbon motor is unique for its use of oversized rare-earth magnets. The two Neodymium magnets measure 1x1x2 inches; each can apply in excess of 130 lbs of pull force. The design of the Cliff motor directs this considerable amount of energy toward the ribbon element. According to Cliff, the high flux intensity gives the RM1 a 6 dB higher output signal at the ribbon than other designs. The ribbon measures approximately 51mm x 4mm, and is made of 1.8-micron thick aluminum.
The output transformer feeds an active gain stage designed by LR Baggs, a manufacturer of acoustic pickups. The circuit increases the signal level, and performs frequency-specific filtering to tailor the mic’s sound. The stated sensitivity is 12.5 mV/Pa, which is comparable to a condenser microphone.
