The Chandler Germanium Drive is really a germanium pedal like none you’ve used before. It has all the tone and color you would expect from germanium but none of the mud and none of the fat – only an intense colored germanium tone. This pedal was inspired by Chandler’s Germanium preamps and their work with other germanium amplifiers, but has even more to it. The five feedback selections on the Germanium Drive modify the tone, harmonic distortion and clipping of the pedal and offer a nice range of uses from tighter, lightly driven to slightly fuzzy, to full on germanium hell! IMPORTANT READ BEFORE USING PEDAL The Germanium Drive pedal runs on any two separate +9V power supplies. When two separate supplies are connected to the pedal, one of the supplies is routed inside the pedal to -9 volts. That is why the Germ Drive cannot be daisy-chained from one power supply. Most germanium-based pedals run on a -9 volt supply which cannot run on the same supply as other pedals. The Chandler Germanium Drive is similar in this regard. Note: Do NOT daisy-chain the two plugs from one supply. Note: Do NOT use one power supply polarized to -9.
I did a deep dive on this pedal prior to purchase. I understand that “Perfect” tone is subjective, and there are several other gear choices that I found to help achieve the absolute superlative tone to my ears. This pedal isn’t good at versatility, but if you want one amazing tone that you have hoped for years to achieve. This is it. A single P90 Les Paul junior, high quality instrument cables, the Chandler Germanium Drive pedal, and a Matchless DC30 2x12 combo (or a Bad Cat/Vox AC30 2x12 type amp). The AC30 (and its Bad Cat/Matchless derivatives), are class A amps that lack a negative feedback loop circuit, that is common with other guitar amplifiers. The Chandler Germanium drive has a 5 way selector switch, that allows you to choose the amount of negative feedback in the circuit— this in itself, has a very unique and useful musical tone that is creamy and thick, along with enhancing the even order harmonic nuances that seem to jump from the strings, with very little effort. (I have found “2” to be the most effective without being overbearing). The drive knob seems stagnant from unity gain to around 6 1/2 on the dial. I have found my sweet spot to be just above 7. It helps to have the volume knob on the amp above 5, (attenuation is recommended)— 30 watts of class A tube power is LOUD! Adjust Bass, Treble, and Cut to your liking. A P90 equipped guitar and a Matchless DC30 complete tonal bliss. Best for blues to classic rock, back to a colored clean tone, just roll back the guitar volume. The only con I could find: this pedal isn’t somewhat pricey for novice players. I would buy again without a second thought. I highly recommend the Chandler Germanium Drive.
