The Problem
Traditional noise reduction methods are inadequate. Dual-ended processes require encoding and do nothing to remove noise already present in a signal. Low-pass filters remove as much wanted signal as noise. Dynamic filters pump, round off transients and dull the genuine signal. Gates remove no noise when open. Expanders pump, and multi-band expanders have poor separation filters, leading to loss of high frequencies, loss of ambience, and degradation of hard transients.
A Simple Solution
Nonetheless, there are many occasions when it is inconvenient or unnecessary to use the powerful NR-4 or NR-5 processes to remove broadband noise. Often, the nature of the noise and the wanted signal is such that a simpler dehisser will produce highly acceptable results very quickly and with minimal fuss.
Dehiss-3 is optimised for relatively uncoloured and consistent hiss, and for broadband noises such as fan-noise. Its simple and intuitive interface means that excellent results can be obtained quickly by users with few (or no) advanced audio engineering skills.
The Plaudits
As the algorithm behind the DH-1 Auto Dehisser, Dehiss-3 won an EQ Magazine 'Best Of Show' Award at the 97th AES Convention.
