The Avantone “Cabernet (C-series)” mics from Avantone Electroincs are designed to offer true professional performance. They will meet or surpass the performance and specifications of much higher priced mics. The Avantone CK-40 is truly a gorgeous looking and sounding microphone. The design, character and performance can be compared directly to some of the world’s very finest stereo FET mics but at a fraction of their cost! The rugged CK-40 microphone body and capsule assemblies are precision machined of brass. Aesthetically, it features an elegant metallic cabernet wine-red finish, accented with polished nickel trim and plated steel grills.
The discreet Class A low-noise FET circuitry will yield pleasing, professional results comparable to much more expensive designs. Any studio can proudly offer the stereo CK-40 as a group vocal mic, room mic, piano mic or utility condenser due to its versatility. It exudes class visually as well as sonically. The versatile Avantone CK-40 Stereo Class A FET microphone features twin LARGE 35mm center-terminated pressure gradient transducers. Their close physical proximity places them in a tight vertical array to allow accurate stereo imaging without phase issues arising. The top capsule/grill assembly rotates up to 180 degrees relative to the lower capsule/grill assembly. This feature along with the multi-pattern independent selector choices allow for all stereo recording techniques to be utilized. (XY-Coincident / Blumlein, M-S).
The two sets of pad, pattern select & LF rolloff switches independently control the capsules. (Front switches control the lower fixed grill/capsule while the rear switches control the upper rotating headgrill.) The CK-40 operates on standard 48 volt phantom power and includes a five-pin mic cable that plugs into the included 1x2 stereo splitter box. Two standard XLR mic cables are then all that is required to connect to a phantom powered mic preamp/console channel. So many sonic and spatial options are available with this microphone and we encourage you to experiment and use your ears as the final judge for stereo panning spread, use of omni –vs- cardioid or whether utilizing M-S miking techniques will better serve your particular situation etc.
I just got one of these, used, from a local seller. I am a singer songwriter, but I also have a YouTube channel where I occasionally demo/review musical gear and guitars. I use a Zoom Q8 camera, usually, to do my demos, which has an X-Y coincident mic on top. I wanted a simple, one mic setup, in order to do more studio work, without having to bust out the camera for the X-Y mic. This Avantone mic is awesome, and just what I needed to get professional sounding studio recordings of my guitars. I have a relatively small home studio, and I don’t have space to setup two mic stands to record in stereo. This CK-40 makes it so easy, and the versatility is off the hook. It’s super fun to experiment with different settings. The low frequency roll off is nice, and the pad works great. You can’t use the pad and the low roll-off at the same time, but I don’t see that being a problem at all. I used it most recently for a demo of my Maestro Traditional OO-MH acoustic guitar, and it sounded so true to what I hear in the room when playing. It was very true to life, and that’s important for my needs. The rotating upper capsule makes it so easy to dial in a great sound. It sounded equally good for vocals/speech, and recording in mono. I am very impressed with this mic, especially at the price! Like I said, I found a used one locally, but I would gladly buy another at full retail, should something happen to this one. I highly recommend this for anyone who records a lot of acoustic instruments. I am sure this would shine on drums, as well.
