The BURL Audio B16 Mothership is a 2U, 2-slot version of the revolutionary B80 Mothership, Burl Audio’s signature product. Simply put, the B80 Mothership has redefined digital recording, and now the legendary sound can be found in a smaller, more portable B16 Mothership. Utilizing technology developed for the B80, the new B16 Mothership uses the exact same I/O cards as the B80 Mothership, continuing Burl Audio's deep dedication to analog, Class A circuitry. The result is not only heard, but it is also felt. The Mothership stands out from every other interface on the market not because it is colored, but because it does not sterilize the source.
Using a card-based system, and a heavy-duty 2U chassis, the B16 Mothership employs 2 daughter card slots with an internal power supply and your choice of Motherboard for Digilink, MADI, Dante, or SoundGrid connectivity. Every ADC channel uses a proprietary BX1 transformer and every DAC channel has the latest Burl Audio discrete op-amp, BOPA4.
For anyone who has yearned for a Mothership in a smaller format, this is a dream come true. Check out our Buyer's Guide to learn more about the Burl B80 and B16 Motherships and their respective AD/DA option cards.
The BMB1 comes standard with two DigiLink connectors for direct hookup to Avid Pro Tools. BURL AUDIO does away with the expansion port, making both primary ports. That means you can play 64 ADC or DAC channels straight out of Pro Tools with one unit! With 6 BAD8s and 4 BDA8s a 48x32 IO can be achieved. With 2 BAD8s and 8 BDA8s a 16x64 IO can be achieved. With the configurability of the Mothership the IO possibilities are limitless.
The B22 ORCA utilizes the same analog, all-discrete circuit path philosophy as other BURL Audio products with an emphasis on the ultimate in sonic transparency and 3D stereo imaging. The ELMA version includes the same resistor matched ELMA stepped attenuator found in the B26 Orca.
Featuring the BURL NextGen BOPA14 op-amps, the B22 delivers tight bass and high definition throughout the audio spectrum. Instruments and mixes have a more real, 3D sound, with wider stereo image and even more depth while preserving the original shape and harmonic balance of the source.
The B22 ORCA employs 4 DAC channels. The first two are mix/mastering grade DAC channels with switchable BX5 output transformers. These channels can be used to feed a separate headphone amp or a mix/mastering chain. You can also use these channels to send out tracks for analog processing. The second two DAC channels feed the main monitor section which features two stereo speaker outputs and one stereo headphone output.
Combined with the BAD4M daughter card you have the ultimate 4 in x 4 out mastering solution.
Evolve your listening, mixing and mastering through the B22 ORCA Control Room Monitor and give you and your ears a competitive advantage.
The Burl Audio BAD4M is a mastering grade, 4-channel ADC daughter card for the B80 and B16 MOTHERSHIP with stepped attenuators and switchable input transformers. Specifically designed for mixing and mastering, the BAD4M uses the latest BURL NextGen analog technology for superior fidelity and clarity.
The BAD4M is the result of over 25 years of R&D experience in pro audio digital and analog design. Following on the success of the B2 BOMBER ADC and the BAD8 for the MOTHERSHIP, the BAD4M utilizes BURL Audio’s NextGen Analog technology with the same BX1 transformer coupled circuit path as the BAD8 (no op-amps) and a transformerless analog front end using BOPA14. The BAD4M allows you to switch between the BAD8 style analog front end and the newly developed, BOPA14 based, transformerless analog front end.
The BOPA14 with BURL NextGen Analog is the result of hundreds of hours of listening tests. It boasts stunning clarity and definition and raises the bar of excellence in pro audio analog electronics fidelity. The BOPA14 is an all discrete, Class A op-amp with a minimal number of transistors. This new analog design will blow your mind with tighter bass and higher definition throughout the audio spectrum.
For years, engineers have taken their fully digital projects and run them through a 2-track analog tape machine to make them sound “less digital”. The BDA4M with the BX5 output transformer routed to a BAD4M with the BX1 input transformer does something very similar, but better. Using a BDA4M to BAD4M signal path will give you better performance than tape in that there is higher dynamic range, more headroom, and better frequency response with no tape hiss.
The BAD4M transformerless analog front end is perfect for situations where you want a pure capture of a mix or mastering chain where the signal is already warm and peak limited. The BOPA14 ensures a truly clear, faithful capture of the source material.
On the digital side, the BAD4M employs a couple of new features; a switchable ADC filter and AVID delay matching. Switching the ADC filter allows you to change the tone from the classic BURL sound to a more aggressive tone with a more forward mid-range. The AVID delay matching allows you to perfectly match the input delay of an AVID IO which is crucial for hardware inserts.
