The Burl Audio B32 Vancouver is a 32-channel mix bus and analog summing mixer. Featuring 32 discrete inputs, new switchable BX5 input transformers, and an innovative gain boost feature, the Vancouver is perfect for adding analog attitude to any mix. Just don’t be surprised when your 2-track tape machine starts collecting dust.
The Vancouver features 32 all-discrete, Class A inputs that instantly recall the sound of vintage consoles. By utilizing industry-standard D-Sub inputs, the Vancouver packs extensive I/O into a compact 1u package.
Inputs 1-8 are mono tracks panned to center—perfect for kick, snare, bass and lead vocals. Inputs 9-32 are stereo tracks with odd inputs panned hard left and even inputs panned hard right. Place a track anywhere in the stereo field using the pan knobs in your DAW. Dual stereo XLR outputs offer flexible routing—send Mix 1 directly to your monitor controller, and send Mix 2 to your patch bay for parallel processing.
The Vancouver features sleek, intuitive front panel controls. Audiophile-grade 0.1% stepped attenuators allow you to dial in the perfect stereo balance — or max them out to kick the Vancouver into overdrive. For even more smoothness, fatness and glue, toggle on the BX5 output transformers.
And if you want to simulate the compression and harmonic saturation characteristics of a classic 2-track tape machine, just engage the +6 dB boost to add gain into the summing amplifier. Similar to gaining up a mic pre, this pushes the op-amps to add plenty of glue with clarity and low end response.
With 32 input channels and switchable tonality, the B32 Vancouver adds depth, warmth and clarity to any mix. And for the ultimate analog solution, use the B32 Vancouver in conjunction with the B1 MIC PREs, the B80 MOTHERSHIP and the B26 ORCA.
My mixes would just sound like… a sound. Like sound coming from the left speaker and some more similar sound coming from the right speaker. And that was that. Often my mixes coming into and out of the Orion 32+ 4th Gen would cap out at 32 channels. My mixes are still terrible but at least now they have that spatial depth :-)
Really makes a difference in depth and clarity
Fantastic unit. Build quality is as good as you could hope for, as is the sonic quality of this piece of equipment. The simplistic no pan/volume leaves some hesitant but once you get your hands on it, you quickly realize it's for the better. This allows for full control in the daw to adjust individual track / bus gain staging and panning and simply letting the summing magic happen in the hardware. This not only keeps the path shorter and cleaner but has a more refined approach for hybrid mixing workflow. Burl Vancouver gives your mixes a big, wide sound with deep and tight lows and pleasing sheen highs. I use the +6db and transformers in to hear more of the character from the unit, as it sounds amazing. When you crank it, almost sounds like you're hitting tape. Dont be afraid to hit the mix bus hard!
I was on the fence about summing vs. "in the box" mixing until my VK rep sent me the Vancouver to check out. What a difference! It adds warmth and "glue" to my mix that I just can't get working completely in the box. To me, it's well worth the extra step and makes for an easily place to insert hardware outboard gear between the interface D/A convertor and the Vancouver inputs. I like it best with the transformers switched in. Check it out!
