The Bold North Audio MS10-W is a replacement woofer for the iconic Yamaha NS-10M studio monitor woofer, painstakingly recreated to match the exact timbre and tone of the original. This 7-inch, 8 ohm woofer matches the frequency response of the original driver more closely than any manufacturer has ever achieved.
There’s an old saying still murmured around classic studios; “If it sounds good on NS-10s, it’ll sound good on anything.” The Yamaha NS-10M studio monitor is one of the most iconic pieces of studio equipment of all time. The NS-10 rose to fame not for its high-fidelity tone, but for its ability to highlight potential problems in a mix, making them the ultimate solution to translation problems.
Known for their aggressive, midrange-forward sound, NS-10s have graced the tops of recording consoles all over the world for decades. Unfortunately, after Yamaha discontinued the product, Yamaha-made replacement parts are no longer available, forcing many engineers to shelf these tried and true studio monitors… until now.
The Bold North Audio MS10-W Replacement Woofer for Yamaha NS10 exactly matches the sound of the original Yamaha woofer. Using state-of-the-art laser-based measurement tools, MISCO engineers were able to reverse engineer these classic drivers with unparalleled precision. Break out your classic near fields again and discover problems in your mix you never would have noticed on traditional speakers!
The MS10-W is packaged and sold individually, but MISCO highly recommends that NS-10 owners replace both woofers at the same time. Drivers tend to suspensions tend to fatigue over time and no longer perform as they should. For the best imaging and sound staging it is essential that left and right speakers be as closely matched as possible. Replacing both mid-woofers with MS10-Ws will restore your NS-10s back to their original glory, sounding just as good as they did the day you took them out of the box.
After a series of unfortunate events leading to a blown ns-10 woofer I was on the hunt. I started to realize that of course I would want a matched pair. Looking on the used/NOS market made me scared - I was convinced I wanted a NOS pair but they are expensive and hard to find. Read lots about these and decided to give them a shot. I swapped the one bad woofer out and tested them in mono against each other. I was pleasantly surprised how incredibly similar they sounded. To my ears, it just sounds like a “new” ns 10 woofer. A bit more firm in a pleasing way. No extra harshness or weirdness. Tighter low end. Been using the pair for a couple months and haven’t thought for a second that I made the wrong choice. No part of me wishes I bought a NOS pair. Buy with confidence folks!
I should note that I own the original 1980s vertical model NS10s, as opposed to the horizontal NS-10M Studio version, which are lower power handling and are described as having more "clear mids / harsh highs" and bass rolloff around 85 Hz. I have been using this pair for around 15~ years. Our studio also has a pair of the horizontal NS-10M Studio monitors, and I find the differences between the two models to be very minimal, with the often described tamer highs & additional power handling of the later model NS-10M Studios being negligible. I wasn't expecting the new Bold North drivers to have a nearly identical sound profile to the very well broken in original 40+ year old drivers they replaced. If anything, the Bold North drivers are slightly smoother with a more pronounced low end. However, I use a Yamaha HS8 subwoofer with them so my concerns about the low end are minimal. Overall super impressed. The Bold North drivers are so close to the original that I can't imagine pursuing any other options. Hopefully they start manufacturing a replacement tweeter, as well! Also: there wasn't anything wrong with my original NS-10 drivers. I purchased another pair of NS-10Ms and both woofers were seized, so these Bold North speakers were SUPPOSED to go in those boxes. However, I got antsy while waiting for parts to recap the busted pair and decided to swap the Bold Norths in to my functional speakers, which are already recapped and have both the woofers & tweeters fused.
I am really enjoying these replacement woofers for my ns10s. These vintage speakers get another go around thanks to the industrious folks at Bold North.
Was looking to bring some new life into some old ns-10s, but wanted original woofers. Not as easy to find these days. Was between these and the Avantone remakes but had concerns they would change the sound of the ns-10s. Went with the Bold North Audio woofers at the suggestion of my VK rep and was pretty surprised how much they sound like what I remember original ns-10 woofers sounding like. Definitely brought new life and detail to the mids and low mids compared to the original woofers I replaced, but without changing the overall color of the speakers. Would confidently purchase these again as replacement woofers for original ns-10 woofers.
Many thanks, the drivers seem to be nearly perfect replicas of the original. However whilst i have you, one of my boxes seems to be dishing out more bottom end than the other? I'm just wondering if one of the x-overs is playing up? do you have a cct diagram?
