The year is 1993. Mike and Andrew Nehra's passion for recording is at an all-time peak as their studio, The White Room, flourishes in downtown Detroit. The brothers head to England to buy several racks worth of vintage Neve modules. It's more than just an opportunity to expand the studio; it's the spark of something new.

From a team of two to a workforce of over 100, Vintage King has grown from its humble beginnings into one of the world's preeminent pro audio retailers. Throughout 2023, we'll share the story of our 30 years in the business, talk to some friends we've helped along the way, and show you where we're going in the decades to come.

Over the years, we’ve worked closely with studios of all sizes and styles, from cutting-edge home studios to world-renowned multi-room facilities, and have helped them find their sound through our expert gear selection and service.

As part of our 30th-anniversary celebration, we’ll explore the history of the company, the gear that we’ve serviced and sold throughout the years, and 30 iconic studios that have made a lasting impact on us and the recording industry.

To kick things off, we spoke with our friends at Big Bad Sound in Los Angeles. Read the full interview to learn more about what it's been like building out one of LA's most revered studios, and how VK has helped the studio become what it is today.

But our story isn't just about gear and studios—it's also about the people who make Vintage King what it is today. From our founders, Mike and Andrew Nehra, to our dedicated team of sales, warehouse, and showroom staff, we are a family of music lovers who are passionate about what we do.

Let’s take a quick look back at what’s changed at Vintage King since we celebrated our 25th anniversary back in 2018.

In 2020, Vintage King released PLAYBACK magazine, loaded with cutting-edge gear reviews, interviews with award-winning engineers, studio install stories and more. We’ve since gone on to release four issues of PLAYBACK magazine, including cover stories with Adrian Younge, Heba Kadry, Lisa Bella Donna and Dweezil Zappa.

Originally established in 2012 and 2013, our brick-and-mortar showrooms in Los Angeles and Nashville offer pro audio fans a place to demo gear before making a purchase. In order to deliver a state-of-the-art studio experience, Vintage King relocated both showrooms in 2021. In addition to providing a larger warehouse and more space for demo gear, each of the new showrooms features a state-of-the-art control room environment.

In 2022, Vintage King moved to a new headquarters and warehouse in Troy, Michigan, where they continue to operate today. The new location has allowed VK to expand their inventory and improve logistics, making it even easier for customers to get their hands on the gear they need. Vintage King is proud to continue serving the pro audio community from their new home base in Troy.

As we gear up for our 30th anniversary in 2023, Vintage King is ready to take on the next decade with a fresh perspective and some amazing new gear. But most importantly, we’re committed to continuing to support and inspire the recording community. We know that music is about more than just gear—it's about passion, creativity, and the drive to make something truly special. And we are proud to be a part of that journey.

Thanks to all of our loyal customers, partners and friends who have supported us throughout the years. We're grateful for your trust and we're excited to continue providing the best gear and service in the industry. Here's to the next 30 years of making music and making your mark.
