Vintage King has long been known as a trusted resource for recording studios and audio professionals around the world. From iconic commercial studios and boutique spaces to cutting-edge immersive rooms, we’ve been behind some of the industry’s most exciting builds. But did you know that we’ve also spent decades supporting high schools, colleges, and universities with studio design, gear selection, and expert consultation?

Whether it’s outfitting a student mix lab with dozens of audio interfaces or helping an institution modernize a flagship studio, our team of experienced Audio Consultants is here to help every step of the way. From early conceptualization to final cable tie, we provide schools with personalized solutions built around their curriculum, budget, and future goals.

Here are just a few examples of schools we’ve worked with recently:

Stephen F. Austin State University elevated its studios with Solid State Logic System T, a Rupert Neve Designs 5088 console, and an immersive monitoring setup.

Full Sail University partnered with VK to integrate 10 Solid State Logic ORIGIN consoles and 11 BiG SiX units across multiple labs and classrooms.

Belmont University’s Johnson Theater

Belmont University’s Johnson Theater received a major upgrade with a new console, immersive audio system, and updated wiring infrastructure.

Audio Lab Essentials

While every school’s needs are different, one of the most common requests we receive is for help designing student production labs—spaces where dozens of workstations are equipped with the essential tools for recording, mixing, and producing music. We recently sat down with our EDU team to get their take on what gear makes the biggest impact for students and how schools can get the most value from their investment.

FOCUSRITE SCARLETT 2I2 USB AUDIO INTERFACE (4TH GEN)

Audio Interfaces

When it comes to teaching labs, portability and ease of use are key. Most schools opt for compact, 2-channel USB audio interfaces that offer just enough I/O to handle basic production tasks. Look for models that include built-in headphone amps and simple front-panel controls. Bonus points if the interface comes bundled with a DAW, plug-ins, or virtual instruments to help students hit the ground running.

Studio Monitors

While not every classroom will require dedicated monitors for each student, smaller 5” or 6” drivers are ideal for tight workstations and computer lab setups. Schools tend to prefer options that offer clear, balanced sound at an affordable price—around $300 to $500 per pair is a common target. Reliability and ease of placement also play a big role, especially when space is limited.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-Back Headphones - Black

Headphones

In shared lab environments, isolation matters. Closed-back headphones help keep students focused by minimizing bleed and background noise. They're perfect for tracking, editing, and general coursework. For more advanced mixing classes, open-back models can offer a wider, more natural soundstage—great for critical listening exercises.

Suggested Products:

Novation Launchkey Mini 25 MK4 MIDI Keyboard Controller

MIDI Controllers

Whether your program leans into music performance or electronic production, MIDI controllers are a must. Most schools go for compact units that feature a combination of velocity-sensitive keys, pads, and assignable knobs or faders.

Suggested Products:

Shure SM57 Cardioid Dynamic Instrument Microphone

Microphones

Durability, sound quality, and versatility are key factors in choosing mics for student use. The classics—like the Shure SM57 or SM58—are hard to beat, offering reliable performance in both studio and live settings. A selection of affordable dynamic and condenser mics gives students hands-on experience with the types of tools they’ll be using in the real world.
