Ryan Ordway, a versatile musician, engineer, and producer, along with his wife and business partner Emily, are garnering lots of local love for reviving the recording scene in Portland, Maine. The duo breathed new life into a formerly dormant space, now known as The Studio Portland.

Prior to the pandemic, Ryan had spent time designing and building studios in New Hampshire and Maine. Amid the 2020 lockdown, Ryan decided to call about a building in Portland that was being used as a studio, but only sparingly. The new owner liked what Ryan offered and the couple soon took over the lease.

In the time since moving into the building, the Ordways have put a lot of hard work into The Studio Portland. Ryan teamed up with Vintage King Audio Consultant Joe Dickinson to help procure the API 2448 console that acts as the centerpiece of the control room. His interest in the console stemmed from working with an API desk on some sessions in Nashville.

For Ryan, the appeal of the API is the brand's classic sound. The 2448 distills down the American manufacturer's heritage into each one of its 548C Channel Modules. The console features optimized tracking, routing, and monitoring controls that make running sessions as smooth as possible.

"When you listen to playback on an analog console, it’s round, it’s warm, it’s clear, and it’s focused without being harsh,” Ryan tells the Portland Press Herald.
