Telefunken TF17 FET condenser microphone

Founded in 1903, Telefunken Elektroakustik set the standard for high-quality studio microphones. Known for classics like the ELA M 251, U47, and C12, the German mic makers revolutionized how engineers approach recording.

In 2020, Telefunken introduced the Alchemy Series, which integrates elements of the brand's vintage microphone designs with modern innovations, offering an affordable take on the signature Telefunken sound.

The latest addition to the Alchemy Series, the TF17 condenser microphone combines Telefunken's iconic mid-forward “German” voicing with modern FET technology. With rich sound, a punchy transient response, and high SPL handling, the TF17 is sure to be a modern classic.

TF17 Sound

The Telefunken TF17 condenser microphone delivers a versatile sound profile suited for a wide range of applications. With its fixed cardioid polar pattern, the TF17 offers an extended low-frequency response, bold midrange, and natural top end. This classic tonality makes it ideal for capturing a wide range of sound sources.

The TF17's high SPL handling capability makes it perfect for capturing louder sources including drums and guitar amps. Its punchy transient response and deep low-end will breathe new life into stale-sounding percussion. And thanks to its warm sonic character, the TF17 adds weight to thin sources and smoothes out harsh sounds.

TF17 Components

The TF17 features a combination of circuit elements from other Telefunken designs. Equipped with the same K47-style center terminated capsule as the popular TF47, the TF17 offers a silky-smooth sound not unlike the classic U47.

The TF17 also features Telefunken's unique take on the classic FET microphone amplifier coupled with a custom OEP/Carnhill output transformer—the same design used in the brand's M60 FET small diaphragm condenser and TF11 FET large diaphragm condenser microphones.

Telefunken also outfitted the new TF17 with premium through-hole components, including UK-made polystyrene film capacitors, Nichicon Fine Gold electrolytic capacitors, and an ultra-low-noise JFET for pristine sound. Like all of Telefunekn's Alchemy Series microphones, the TF17 is designed, hand-assembled, and tested in the USA.

TF17 Design

Finished in a sleek black powder coat with black nickel hardware, the TF17 boasts a refined aesthetic that mirrors the form factor of the TF11. Its low-profile size, combined with the absence of an external power supply and cable found in tube microphones, ensures easy setup, breakdown, and transport—making it perfect for both home recording and touring musicians.

The TF17 comes complete with a protective mic case, microphone dust cover, and two mount options, offering added convenience and versatility. Whether recording intimate vocals in a bedroom studio, capturing the grandeur of live pianos, or miking up studio guitar amps, the TF17 consistently delivers excellent results.

For high-fidelity stereo or dual mono recording, the TF17 Stereo Set offers a matched pair of TF17 microphones.
