Joey Raia is a Grammy-nominated recording and mix engineer based in New York. He’s engineered award-winning hits for everyone from Run The Jewels and Danger Mouse to songs for Disney’s Frozen soundtrack. For the last few years, Joey has been working out of a commercial space in Brooklyn dubbed Night Hunter Studios. But when he recently purchased a new house in Dobbs Ferry, New York, he decided to create a brand new private mix room in his guest house. We recently caught up with Joey to see how his new set-up at Hudson Electric Co. has been treating him. Driving through Nashville on the way to visit Jordan Brooke Hamlin, a few things quickly become apparent. Nashville is a city going through changes. There are more and more by the day. Cranes dot the skyline with further signs of progress, as new high-rise condos go up to house the masses flocking to Music City. Whenever we talk about thought leaders or innovation in pro audio, one must begin with Rupert Neve. While he got his start creating monitors, Rupert will forever be known for his work designing consoles and mic pres. The timeless 1073 has long been lauded as the world's preeminent mic pre, a design which Rupert has continued to build upon with his current brand, Rupert Neve Designs. For their latest product, the 5211 two-channel mic pre, Rupert Neve Designs has taken elements from their original 5012 two-channel mic pre and given them a significant upgrade for 2019. One of the biggest updates is the addition of a variable Silk control, which offers users the ability to finely control Rupert's Class A output stage (the same as the Shelford Channel). Pete Lyman is a world-renowned mastering engineer who has worked on records for Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Weezer, and Fall Out Boy, just to name a few. More recently, Lyman mastered Brandi Carlile's 2018 album, By The Way, I Forgive You, which received Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Album of the Year. The importance of converters to the workflow of a mastering engineer like Lyman cannot be emphasized enough. So when his friends at Rupert Neve Designs sent over the RMP-D8, Lyman immediately began working the eight-channel Dante mic preamp and mastering-grade 24-bit 192 kHz converters into his chain. Now operated by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, RCA Studio B in Nashville is open for visitors to explore where their favorite records were made. The hallowed halls of the famous Music City studio have seen just about every legend pass through, including Chet Atkins, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and the King himself, Elvis Presley. “Terry Blackwood of the Imperials asked Elvis how to knock a gun out of somebody's hand if they were trying to rob you,” says RCA Studio B Assistant Studio Manager Johnny Gentile. “So they found a pistol in the studio and held it towards Elvis. Elvis karate kicked the pistol out of the person’s hand and it went flying across the room. The barrel of the pistol went straight through the back of session guitarist Chip Young’s acoustic guitar.” Continue reading →
