  2. How Will Avid Pro Tools Price Changes Effect You?

How Will Avid Pro Tools Price Changes Effect You?
Starting July 1st, Avid will be making some changes to their Pro Tools and creative software pricing. We’re here to give you some insight on what's involved, what it means to you, and how you can buy ahead to lock-in pricing on certain items for next few years. How Avid Pricing Works  Historically, a Pro Tools user would purchase a hardware/software bundle that contained a permanent license for the software. You merely made paid for updates to keep with the latest version releases. Later, Avid moved to an a la carte situation where you could buy the hardware and software separately as you pleased, which made things a lot more flexible. Continue reading →

Upgrading To An API 2448 Console By Trading In Your Current API 1608
API Audio recently introduced their latest creation, the 2448, which follows in line with their classic console offerings like the 1608, Legacy AXS, and Vision series. The 2448 is available in 24-channel, 32-channel, and 40-channel configurations, and each channel features two complete audio paths for true ‘inline’ simultaneous analog tracking and monitoring. We want to help our clients upgrade to the API 2448 and one way we are making it easier is by offering the highest trade-in prices on API 1608 consoles. Let’s take a look at the math to see how you can easily finance a new console when trading in your current 1608 desk Continue reading →
  4. Recording And Mixing With The Burl B16 Mothership And B32 Vancouver

Recording And Mixing With The Burl B16 Mothership And B32 Vancouver
Burl Audio is well known for the incredible B80 Mothership, but their gear offerings extend beyond the famed converter rack and give users a number of different options in the studio. In an effort to better showcase the Burl B16 Mothership and B32 Vancouver summing mixer, we headed to the 45 Factory with Audio Consultant Andy Caitlin (a.k.a The Lasso) to work on a track that he conceived during a recent tour. For the uninitiated, the Burl B16 Mothership is a 2-slot version of the much bigger, 10-slot B80 Mothership. The 2U rack mount form factor allows users of smaller project studios to take advantage of Burl converters. For Andy's track, he recorded piano, drums, electric guitar, and synthesizer through a B16 Mothership with the BAD8 and BDA8 daughter cards, and a BMB4 Waves SoundGrid card connecting the rig to the studio's Mac. VK Shootout: Vintage V76 Preamp vs. Universal Audio V76 Plug-In
Universal Audio is responsible for creating some of the most accurate emulations of classic pro audio gear, including the Fairchild 660/670 , LA-2A, and Neve 1073. Add another essential preamp to that list, as the TAB/Telefunken V76 has recently got its own UAD plug-in. The V76 has some history behind it, which is chronicled in great detail over on our new Pro Audio Hall of Fame page. It all starts with the foundational block of the V41 mic pre, which was the design basis for the V72. The V76 is essentially two V72s in series with 76 dB of gain. Continue reading →

  8. Five Sounds With Mitch Easter

    Five Sounds With Mitch Easter
In our new series, Five Sound With..., we talk with world-renowned engineers and producers about how they got five sounds from your favorite records. Mitch Easter is an acclaimed producer and engineer, best known for his work on R.E.M.’s first three albums, including 1983’s critically acclaimed Murmur. He's also a talented musician in his own right, whether releasing solo records or as the frontman and lead songwriter for Let’s Active. When it comes to recording Mitch built his first studio in the garage of his parents’ house. In 1980, he opened the aptly named Drive-In Studio. It was here where he cut the demo for R.E.M's “Radio Free Europe” and launched his career. His innovative approach to recording finds Mitch using a combination of classic vintage gear and esoteric budget mics to capture a one-of-a-kind sound. Continue reading →
  9. Replicating Plate Reverb With Plug-Ins, Pedals And Outboard Gear

Replicating Plate Reverb With Plug-Ins, Pedals And Outboard Gear
A few weeks back, we posted a new VK Shootout featuring a vintage EMT 140 plate reverb going up against some popular emulations. People were digging the shootout so much that we decided to do another blog that expands on other ways to get plate reverb sounds in the studio and during live performances. Since the release of the original EMT 140, the options for getting plate reverb sounds have gotten way smaller. Sure... Being smaller than a 600-pound metal structure isn't super hard, but we're talking much smaller, like nearly as small as the palm of your hand. Continue reading →
  10. Apple Announces Long-Awaited Mac Pro Update

Apple Announces Long-Awaited Mac Pro Update
For those of you who have been waiting patiently on Apple to offer a Mac Pro that was upgrade-worthy, they have finally answered your prayers. Earlier today, the tech giant introduced the latest Mac Pro ($5999), which will be available in the Fall and looks to be tailor-made for the modern studio workflow. The new design of the Mac Pro is one of function and accessibility. Apple has created a stainless steel frame with aluminum housing that lifts off and allows for access to every component of the computer. From there, its all about configurability and creating a machine that is ideal for your studio. The new Mac Pro is built around an Intel Xeon processor which can include up to 28 cores (the most Apple has ever offered space for). The computer has large L2 and shared L3 caches, and 64 PCI Express Lanes for tons of bandwidth. Continue reading →
