  1. Quick Hits: Pope Audio BAX2020 Classic EQ And Drive

Quick Hits: Pope Audio BAX2020 Classic EQ And Drive
Pope Audio might be a new name to the pro audio world, but its founder Adam Pope has been working in the trenches for decades. He has spent years fixing pro audio gear and is now releasing his own take on a classic EQ design. The BAX2020 EQ And Drive utilizes a Baxandall EQ circuit, a design that was originally developed by Peter Baxandall in the early 1950s. What's the difference between a Baxandall EQ and traditional EQ? It's simple. While traditional EQs feature a fast rise above a set frequency, Baxandall EQs employ a gently rising slope that makes for a more natural sound. Continue reading →
  2. Revisiting The Tegeler Audio Creme For Compression And EQ

Revisiting The Tegeler Audio Creme For Compression And EQ
Tegeler Audio has been around for several years, but the company is relatively new to Vintage King. After checking out the German brand's Creme bus compressor and mastering EQ, we knew we had to do a demo to show off this beautiful piece of gear. The concept for the Creme is simple. Tegeler Audio was looking to give mix engineers all of the tools needed for compression and EQing a track in one simple package. And what a package it is, as this 2U rack space unit has a really attractive blue patina faceplate with classic chicken head control knobs. Continue reading →

  4. Buyer's Guide: 500 Series

    Buyer's Guide: 500 Series
The 500 Series format is comprised of a whole slew of different signal processing modules in a compact rack unit. Mic preamps, equalizers, compressors, DI boxes, filters, effects... You name it, you can find it in a 500 Series version from a wide variety of manufacturers. Most of those manufacturers participate in the VPR Alliance, established to set standards for the format to ensure that the end user can rely on consistent specifications with regard to voltage, current draw, size, etc. along with proper compatibility with existing modules. The essence of this idea is to make it simple for the user to mix and match modules from different makers, thus allowing for the broadest range of implementation for their products. 6. Around The Shop: Neve 31102 Mic Pre/EQ

Around The Shop: Neve 31102 Mic Pre/EQ
Justin Weiss, a technician over at the Vintage King Tech Shop, has been hard at work restoring and modding 16 vintage Neve 31102 modules. These input modules were designed and intended for use in Neve's large-format recording and mixing consoles, including the 8058 and 8068. These were the first "in-line monitor" desks on the market and gave the engineer tracking and monitoring options at each channel. We'll let Justin take it from here: "Think of a quad summing mixer with small fader and extended mixdown capabilities and a global Mic/Line input switching option. This is the main reason a 31102 is different from all other 10-series (1066, 1073, 1084, etc) modules. The module, on its own, was built with a 10468 Mic input transformer inside and sensitivity switch (gain) setup for only mic levels. The line input signals comes from a companion 32430 Mixdown Switching Module (Line or Tape Returns) located directly below the 31102 in the 8058/68 desk. The switching module gives the user a Line trim missing from the sensitivity of the 31102 gain switch. So, again, the 31102 module was designed around the 8058/68 signal flow. It is worth realizing the purpose of the BA106 board being a buffer between the output of the line input switching module and the EQ built within the 31102 circuits. Continue reading →
