  1. API Audio's 312 Mic Pre Is Back!

API Audio's 312 Mic Pre Is Back!
API Audio has always been synonymous with large sounding American rock records that have lots of analog warmth. One of the key elements of that sound is the API 312 mic pre, which API has just announced is coming back to regular production in 2020. In celebration of API's 50th anniversary, the brand released a limited edition hand-wired version of the 312 in 2019. The new version of the famed preamp announced today is a standard production version that costs $795 and offers the same classic API sound in a 500 Series format. Continue reading →

Meris Hedra 500 Series Offers Rhythmic Pitch Shifting For Your Lunchbox

The latest creation from Meris sees them returning to form with the Hedra 500 Series. For those who are wondering, this is the same 3-voice intelligent pitch shifter that was released in pedal form and made my list of the hottest releases of 2019. The new 500 Series version accels with pro audio grade components and is ideal for both tracking and mixing during your next session. Continue reading →

Recording And Mixing With The New Solid State Logic SSL2+ Interface
Days before the start of the 2020 NAMM Show, Solid State Logic rocked the pro audio world with the announcement of two new interfaces. Just like the best selling SiX desktop mixer, the SSL2 and SSL2+ interfaces have brought the brand's technology down to a more affordable range for a whole new generation of audio creators. The all-new SSL2 and SSL2+ are USB audio interfaces that draw from over four decades of SSL innovation. Each interface features two impressive analog mic pres, in addition to 24-bit / 192 kHz converters, and a "Legacy 4K" mode. The newly designed "Legacy 4K" mode is based on the SL4000 series console and adds classic analog color and character to your recordings for a dash of extra vintage vibe. Continue reading →
  4. First Listen: Retro Instruments 500PRE

    First Listen: Retro Instruments 500PRE
When Retro Instruments first announced the brand's new 500PRE ($799), we knew we were in love before we ever even heard it. After all, what's not to love about bringing the Sta-Level design to the 500 Series world and packing three tubes into that compact module. Little did we know, we had something to do with the inspiration for it. "It was inspired by the Vintage King April Fools’ Day post on the 500 Series Fairchild 670," says Retro Instruments Owner/Designer Phil Moore. "“The performance of the 500PRE exceeded my expectations. It’s based on professional tube console program amplifiers from the era of the Sta-Level and 176. It’s got 75 dB of gain and no compromises." First Listen: Rupert Neve Designs 5211 Dual Mic Preamp
Whenever we talk about thought leaders or innovation in pro audio, one must begin with Rupert Neve. While he got his start creating monitors, Rupert will forever be known for his work designing consoles and mic pres. The timeless 1073 has long been lauded as the world's preeminent mic pre, a design which Rupert has continued to build upon with his current brand, Rupert Neve Designs. For their latest product, the 5211 two-channel mic pre, Rupert Neve Designs has taken elements from their original 5012 two-channel mic pre and given them a significant upgrade for 2019. One of the biggest updates is the addition of a variable Silk control, which offers users the ability to finely control Rupert's Class A output stage (the same as the Shelford Channel). The original only featured a single Silk button with no knob to control the output. Continue reading →

First Listen: Antelope Audio Orion 32 HD Gen 3 and 10MX Atomic Clock
Antelope Audio has been extremely busy as of late. The company launched the succesful Edge and Verge modeling mic series and has followed that up with a reworking of many of its interfaces. At the 2019 NAMM Show, we were introduced to the third generation of the Orion 32+ and Orion 32 HD. Both of these interfaces have seen significant upgrades with new mastering-grade converters, an improved dynamic range, and spruced up faceplates. With the recent release of these upgraded Orion interfaces, we wanted to hit the studio and use the Orion 32 HD to record and mix a song. This powerful tool offers 64 channels of audio via USB 3.0 or Avid’s MiniDigilink connectors, and provides access to Antelope’s FPGA effects platform. These plug-ins include a wide variety of classic emulations and impressive tools, including 35 EQs, compressors, reverbs, and more, for real-time effects processing. Continue reading →

This was my first experience buying something from Vintage King (although I surf the "used" categories on the website frequently!), and, despite being on the other side of the world, I had absolutely no trouble and everything went very smoothly.
