  3. Old School Ribbon Mic Revival With The Melodium 42Bn

Old School Ribbon Mic Revival With The Melodium 42Bn
There's something very satisfying about throwing a hulking ribbon microphone up in the studio to capture vocals, drums or room sounds. Maybe it's because engineers have been doing it since the ribbon mic was first invented in the 1920s by Drs. Walter H. Schottky and Erwin Gerlach. It's a piece of the past that we can still relive today. One of the more sizeable ribbon microphone designs from recording history is the Melodium 42B. The microphone was originally built by Charles Bouteleau and Emlie Furn in Paris in the early 1940s with an initial production run that lasted into the late 1960s. The 42B featured four monster Alnico magnets and delivered a smooth, warm sound. Continue reading →

So how do these summing mixer options from Rupert Neve Designs differ? 9. Warm Audio's New WA-67 Microphone Goes Head-To-Head With A Vintage U67

    Warm Audio's New WA-67 Microphone Goes Head-To-Head With A Vintage U67
At the tail-end of what would traditionally be AES season, Warm Audio is putting an exclamation point on the current crop of new releases with the WA-67. That's right, the pro audio brand that has given us wallet-friendly versions of the 47, 87, and 251 is now back with its own take on the classic workhorse microphone. For the uninitiated, the U67 came about when Telefunken would no longer produce the VF14 steel tube used for the U47. Neumann began working on the microphone's successor and introduced the U60 in 1960. This mic would eventually become known as the U67. Since its launch, the microphone has achieved Mt. Rushmore-level status, a must-have for any session. Continue reading →

Quick Hits: Pope Audio BAX2020 Classic EQ And Drive
Pope Audio might be a new name to the pro audio world, but its founder Adam Pope has been working in the trenches for decades. He has spent years fixing pro audio gear and is now releasing his own take on a classic EQ design. The BAX2020 EQ And Drive utilizes a Baxandall EQ circuit, a design that was originally developed by Peter Baxandall in the early 1950s. What's the difference between a Baxandall EQ and traditional EQ? It's simple. While traditional EQs feature a fast rise above a set frequency, Baxandall EQs employ a gently rising slope that makes for a more natural sound. Continue reading →
