First Listen: SSL 18 Audio Interface

For over four decades, Solid State Logic has defined the sound of professional recording studios with the brand’s legendary consoles and outboard gear. Today, SSL continues to push the boundaries of professional audio with the introduction of the SSL 18 audio interface and ALPHA 8 Expander.

These powerful new additions to the SSL lineup deliver the brand's signature sound quality and workflow innovations in a format that's perfectly suited for modern production environments. At the bottom of the page, you’ll find our in-depth video breakdown of both new products, but first, let’s take a look at what the new SSL 18 and ALPHA 8 are all about.

SSL 18 Audio Interface

SSL 18 Audio Interface

The SSL 18 represents a milestone for Solid State Logic as the brand’s first-ever rackmount USB audio interface. Drawing from decades of analog and digital expertise, SSL has created an interface that delivers exceptional sonic performance alongside professional studio features that set a new standard in its class.

At the heart of the SSL 18 are eight SSL-designed microphone preamps featuring advanced two-stage circuitry that ensures ultra-low distortion while preserving the natural character of your sources.

Each preamp can be enhanced with SSL's Legacy 4K mode, which introduces the iconic harmonic saturation and top-end sparkle reminiscent of their renowned 4000 series consoles. This innovative circuit carefully recreates two essential characteristics of the famous "4K sound"—a controlled amount of finely-tuned harmonic distortion and a musical high-frequency boost that adds presence and character to any source.

The SSL 18's rear panel reveals its professional heritage with ten balanced line outputs, each operating at +24 dBu for seamless integration with high-end outboard gear. Outputs 1-4 can be configured between +9 dBu and +24 dBu, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of studio monitors and vintage equipment. All outputs are DC-coupled, making them perfect for sending control voltages to synthesizers and modular systems.

The front panel houses two instrument/Hi-Z inputs for direct recording of guitars and vintage synths, while dual headphone outputs feature three impedance modes (Standard, High Sensitivity, and High Impedance) to optimize performance with any headphones. These outputs can even be repurposed as additional line outputs for added routing flexibility.

SSL Alpha 8 Expander

ALPHA 8 Expander

The ALPHA 8 builds upon SSL's acclaimed ALPHA Link heritage, offering eight channels of pristine 32-bit/192 kHz conversion with remarkable specifications: 120 dB dynamic range on inputs, 123 dB on outputs, and vanishingly low THD+N measurements of -110 dB and -108 dB respectively. This level of performance ensures that every nuance of your analog gear is captured and reproduced with stunning accuracy.

What sets the ALPHA 8 apart is its incredible routing flexibility. Each analog input and output can be individually configured for +9, +18, +20, or +24 dBu operating levels, optimizing signal integrity for everything from vintage gear to modern professional equipment. The unit can function as a simple bidirectional analog-to-digital converter, an 18x18 USB audio interface, or any combination of the two, with comprehensive routing options for all analog and digital I/O.

When paired with the SSL 18, the ALPHA 8 becomes an even more powerful tool. Connect one ALPHA 8 to add eight channels or chain two units for 16 additional channels of I/O via ADAT. This makes it easy to integrate 500 Series modules, outboard processors, analog mixers, and more.
