The wait is over. After nearly five years of industry-wide shortages, the legendary Sony C800G PAC tube condenser microphone is finally back in stock. Since late 2019, the legendary tube mic disappeared from shelves due to a halt in production, likely due to component shortages and global supply chain issues brought on by the pandemic. Now, Sony has resumed production, and Vintage King is proud to offer this modern classic once again.

Let’s take a closer look at why the Sony C800G PAC has earned its reputation as one of the most iconic microphones of the modern era, and explore a few ways to capture that signature sound without breaking the bank.

Sony C800G History

Originally released in 1992, the Sony C800G PAC was designed to compete with vintage European tube microphones that had long dominated the recording industry.

While some modern mics struggle to compete with classics like the Neumann U47 or Telefunken ELA M 251, the C800G carved out its own legacy, becoming the go-to choice for hip-hop, R&B, and pop vocals.

Artists like Dr. Dre, Eminem, and J. Cole embraced the C800G’s airy top end, smooth mids, and subtle tube warmth. It’s a rare example of a contemporary microphone that’s earned its place among the greats.

About The Sony C800G

At the heart of the C800G PAC is a hand-selected 6AU6 vacuum tube. Each tube is individually chosen for optimal performance, delivering smooth, musical warmth in the lower mids while maintaining stunning high-end detail.

The mic’s large dual-diaphragm capsule draws inspiration from the legendary Neumann K67 design, delivering that coveted silky-smooth quality. This capsule forms the foundation of the microphone's signature sound; detailed and present in the high frequencies, yet never aggressive or fatiguing.

One glance at the C800G, and you’ll notice what looks like a radiator attached to the back. This isn’t just for show—it’s an active cooling system that reduces internal noise and distortion, ensuring one of the lowest noise floors of any microphone.

The C800G offers two polar patterns: cardioid and omnidirectional. While its most famous for cardioid mode (perfect for vocals), ther C800G’s  omnidirectional setting shines when capturing room ambience, acoustic instruments, or ensemble recordings.
