  1. First Listen: A Review of the Mellotron Micro Digital Synthesizer

First Listen: A Review of the Mellotron Micro Digital Synthesizer
I recently got to play with one of my new favorite toys, the Mellotron Micro. I’ve always been a huge fan of the way a Mellotron sounds, as they are truly the key to capturing the audio mood of melancholiness. Made famous by The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields” and The Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satin”, the Mellotron sound has been a favorite of many professional keyboardists since the early 1960s. 2. First Listen: A Review Of The Elektron Digitakt Compact Digital Drum Machine

First Listen: A Review Of The Elektron Digitakt Compact Digital Drum Machine
For months around the halls of Vintage King I've been hearing about the Elektron Digitakt, a new all in one compact drum machine and music production station as powerful as any on the market. I have been a big advocate of music production stations like the Korg Kronos and Native Instruments Maschine for the past couple of years, I use them on just about every project I work on as a producer to add bits of ear candy throughout the arrangement. I also love producing electronic music as a little side hobby of mine, so I was really stoked when the new Elektron Digitakt came across my desk. Continue reading →
  3. First Listen: A Review of The Moog Music Subsequent 37 CV

First Listen: A Review of The Moog Music Subsequent 37 CV
At Moogfest 2017, Moog Music announced the release of the Subsequent 37 CV, a higher end reimagining of the Sub 37 Tribute Edition. This fully analog synthesizer with electronic memory for easy recall ability is limited to only 1,000 units in the United States with the first 125 being hand built live during Moogfest. The Moog Music Subsequent 37 CV has so many amazing features, it’s hard to know where to begin with this review. I spent days messing around with this synth, and feel like I only scratched the surface of its potential power. I was blown away with the sounds of the 256 stock presets, ranging from dirty sub bass to lush airy pads. Also, the Subsequent 37 CV is stocked with banks of percussion, woodwinds, brass, organs, sound effects, ambient noises, synth leads and strings. Continue reading →

First Listen: Townsend Labs Sphere L22 Condenser Studio Microphone
Over the past couple days, I’ve been spending some quality time with the new Townsend Labs microphone system, the Sphere L22. As with any other mic modeling system, I was a bit skeptical going into the demo. I’ve been lucky enough to use all the real versions of the microphones modeled on countless recordings across all genres of music over the last 10 years. I must say, the Townsend Labs Sphere L22 is the real deal. Continue reading →
  5. First Listen: Burl Audio B4 Mic Pre

First Listen: Burl Audio B4 Mic Pre
The Burl Audio B4 made its debut at the 2019 NAMM Show and in the time since the announcement, engineers have been dreaming about the expanded possibilities of the B80 and B16 Motherships with the daughter card. For those of you who have been anxiously waiting to add a mic pre card to your Mothership, the wait is finally over. The B4 is here! With the B4 mic pre daughter card, a number of I/O options and configurations open up for both the B80 and B16 Mothership. Since the B4 features four mic/line inputs on the card, an engineer using a single B80 Mothership chassis can create a system that features 40 input channels of audio mic/line inputs. Whether working in the studio or in the live sound setting, you now have access to a significant number of channels with Burl's signature warm, fat sounds. Continue reading →

First Listen: Peach Audio Savannah 196sx Stereo Tube Preamp
David Peach started Peach Audio over 20 years ago and has been designing and hand-building audio gear from his home in Australia ever since. His dynamics, EQs, and tube mic pres, including the Savannah 196sx,  have garnered an underground reputation for their incredible sounds and now we've brought Peach Audio on as an exclusive brand to Vintage King. The Peach Audio Savannah 196sx is the third generation of David's tube mic pre and combines lighting-fast transient response with an ultra-wide dynamic range for class-leading detail and precision. Engineers will be able to take advantage of versatile controls for impedance, multiple transformer options, and mid/side processing capabilities, to craft their source's sound. Continue reading →
  7. First Listen: Retro Instruments Doublewide II Compressor

First Listen: Retro Instruments Doublewide II Compressor
Since the 500 Series format became en vogue, the Retro Instruments Doublewide has been one of the best selling modules at Vintage King. As its name implies, the Doublewide takes up two rack spaces offering premium single channel compression with huge, tube-powered punch via your lunchbox. Late last year, Retro Instruments announced a new successor to the compressor, the Doublewide II. This new version features faster attack and release time, stereo linking capabilities and a greatly improved signal to noise ratio. The Doublewide 2 still features the signature Single and Double timing modes that made the original such a favorite on drums, bass and well… Just about everything. Continue reading →
  8. First Listen: Rupert Neve Designs 5211 Dual Mic Preamp

First Listen: Rupert Neve Designs 5211 Dual Mic Preamp
Whenever we talk about thought leaders or innovation in pro audio, one must begin with Rupert Neve. While he got his start creating monitors, Rupert will forever be known for his work designing consoles and mic pres. The timeless 1073 has long been lauded as the world's preeminent mic pre, a design which Rupert has continued to build upon with his current brand, Rupert Neve Designs. For their latest product, the 5211 two-channel mic pre, Rupert Neve Designs has taken elements from their original 5012 two-channel mic pre and given them a significant upgrade for 2019. One of the biggest updates is the addition of a variable Silk control, which offers users the ability to finely control Rupert's Class A output stage (the same as the Shelford Channel). The original only featured a single Silk button with no knob to control the output. Continue reading →
  9. First Listen: Antelope Audio Orion 32 HD Gen 3 and 10MX Atomic Clock

First Listen: Antelope Audio Orion 32 HD Gen 3 and 10MX Atomic Clock
Antelope Audio has been extremely busy as of late. The company launched the succesful Edge and Verge modeling mic series and has followed that up with a reworking of many of its interfaces. At the 2019 NAMM Show, we were introduced to the third generation of the Orion 32+ and Orion 32 HD. Both of these interfaces have seen significant upgrades with new mastering-grade converters, an improved dynamic range, and spruced up faceplates. With the recent release of these upgraded Orion interfaces, we wanted to hit the studio and use the Orion 32 HD to record and mix a song. This powerful tool offers 64 channels of audio via USB 3.0 or Avid’s MiniDigilink connectors, and provides access to Antelope’s FPGA effects platform. These plug-ins include a wide variety of classic emulations and impressive tools, including 35 EQs, compressors, reverbs, and more, for real-time effects processing. Continue reading →

First Listen: Meris Hedra 3-Voice Rhythmic Pitch Shifter
When it comes to Meris, pedal enthusiasts can always expect the unexpected. Earlier today, the innovative brand announced the release of the Hedra and they are once again living up to that reputation. This 3-voice rhythmic pitch shifter is unlike anything to come before it. Simply put, the Hedra is a behemoth. Blistering guitar harmony leads that track unbelievably well? Check! Getting polyphonic sounds from your monosynth? Got it! Individual delays on each voice? Oh yeah, big time. Continue reading →
