Gear Breakdown: Rupert Neve Designs OptoFET Dual-Stage Compressor

Engineers have been using compressors in tandem for decades, but last year, Rupert Neve Designs simplified things with the release of the OptoFET. As its name suggests, the OptoFET features two distinct compressors in its 1U frame, including the brand's classic Opto design and a new FET circuit.

The key to the OptoFET's flexibility is in its two unique modes of operation. The unit features two main compression modes, including Dual-Stage and Dual-Band. In Dual-Stage mode, you can run the FET into the Opto and also flip it so the Opto runs into the FET. In Dual-Band, you can select which compressor hits the high frequency band and the low frequency band.

Beyond its flexible compression routing, the OptoFET also features dedicated circuits on each compressor that generate more harmonic content. The FET section features GRIT, while the Opto section features BLOOM, with each offering a dedicated blend control that lets you mix in the clean signal alongside the processed sound.
