Throughout history, countless pieces of gear have been used to craft our favorite records, but only a select few have withstood the test of time. Some of these vintage studio tools are still in use today, and many have inspired the modern designs we know and love.
In the hallowed halls of the Vintage King Pro Audio Hall of Fame, we honor these time-tested masterpieces with an in-depth look at their history, characteristics, and lasting imprint on the music industry.
This year, Vintage King is proud to induct a new piece of gear into the Pro Audio Hall of Fame, the legendary RCA 44-A ribbon microphone.
Developed in the 1930s by Harry Olson at RCA Labs, the RCA 44-A remains the standard for ribbon mics with its timeless design and exceptional sound quality. Known for its rich lows and silky smooth highs, the RCA 44-A is a classic choice for recording everything from drums to vocals.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, we’re hosting an exclusive induction ceremony at our Vintage King Los Angeles Summer Block Party on August 16th.
In addition to the regular festivities, we’ll also have a vintage RCA 44-A on display, courtesy of AEA, as well as a special Q&A session with AEA founder and RCA historian Wes Dooley. RSVP below to reserve your spot today!
AEA was born out of Wes Dooley’s dedication to preserving RCA microphones. In 1976, Wes and microphone engineer Dick Knoppow contacted RCA Chief Engineer Jon Sank to learn more about his production process for creating the brand’s ribbon mics.
Using the methods and tools obtained from Sank, AEA began restoring vintage RCA microphones and developing their take on the classic RCA 44 ribbon mic. Today, AEA offers a wide range of carefully crafted ribbon microphones that replicate the iconic quality of the RCA’s timeless designs.
Want to pick up your own RCA 44 ribbon microphone? Unfortunately, RCA stopped making microphones around 1973. The good news is that brands like AEA and several others have stepped in to create modern reproductions of the classic ribbon mic.
