From vintage units to the modern Neve 33609/N, the comp/limiter is an absolute go-to, relied upon for its signature threshold, release, and ratio controls, along with its makeup-gain circuit and the brick-wall limiters on each channel. It's an essential option for everything from adding light color and mix bus glue to high-level limiting for mastering and post-production work.
In our new video, we're processing a number of sources and a mix with the Neve 33609/N, and adding in the Universal Audio 33609/C plug-in for some extra fun. Watch below to hear the 19" rackmount and the UAD emulation go head to head on performances from Madelyn Grant (Female Vocals), Jake LeMond (Male Vocals), Bryan Reilly (Drums, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Bass, and Full Mix-Instrumentation), and Mike Leslie (Full Mix - Vocals).

Over the years, Neve has refined the 33609 design through several iterations, ultimately arriving at the current 33609/N. For those interested in the history behind each version, we recommend checking out our in-depth breakdown of the five different models.
The modern 33609/N captures the look, feel, and sound of the original unit, including its classic diode bridge design, Class A/B amplification, and Marinair transformers across the input, bridge-driver, sidechain, and output stages. Thoughtful modern updates have also been added, such as Fast/Slow switches for controlling the compressor’s attack and expanded I/O switching.
Universal Audio's Neve Dynamics Collection is a standout plug-in package, featuring emulations of the Neve 33609/C and 2254/E comp/limiters. If you watched our video above, you’re now more familiar with the UAD Neve 33609/C, which is based on the second version of Neve’s iconic stereo compressor. Unlike the original discrete design, the 33609/C uses BA640 IC-based cards and Belclere transformers instead of the traditional Maranair/St. Ives. The result is greater headroom and faster recovery after clipping.
The Neve 2254/E is an added bonus in this bundle. This mono comp/limiter first appeared in the late 1960s with all-discrete Class A circuitry, and its diode bridge design paved the way for the later 33609. Together, the UAD 2254/E and 33609/C plug-ins make a powerful pairing for classic Neve dynamics.
