The Legend Returns: Neumann Revives The U67

The legendary Neumann U67 is back! The German microphone manufacturer has created a historically accurate replica including a K67 capsule and EF86 tube. In fact, the new version of the U67 is so true to form that all of the microphone's parts can be exchanged with those from vintage versions of the mic.

The reasons for reviving the Neuman U67 are obvious. Utilized on countless recordings, including David Ruffin on "My Girl," Paul McCartney on "Hey Jude" and Ian Gillan on "Highway Star," this microphone has been a staple since its introduction into the studio world. The Neumann U67 has its origins in the late 1950s, when the brand was looking to create a successor to its flagship microphone, the U47. The famous VF14 tube, which helped make that magical U47 sound, was being withdrawn from production by Telefunken, and Neumann saw this as a reason to create an all-new mic. The technological advancements since the release of the U47 allowed for Neumann to make several improvements. For the U67, Mylar was used for the capsule membrane and the microphone featured an internal cutoff filter and external pad switch. The new capsule included in the mic utilized an accurate figure-of-eight pickup pattern and the smaller EF86 tube allowed for a slimmer body. Most importantly in the development of the U67, the overall shape of the microphone changed. The tubular body of the U47 was gone and replaced with the classic shape that has since become iconic; a tapered head grille (to help reduce capsule resonance), and a tapered body shell (made possible by advances in metal lathe technology). Having three polar positions made the U67 very versatile, and to top it all off, the mic was designed to be opened up without the use of tools - the bell housing unscrewed, releasing the body shell and the removable head assembly.
