NAB2016
Last week's NAB Show 2016 proved to be a playground of all things content related including broadcast, music, film and beyond. With tons of gear announcements and product demos to be had, music makers of all types were excited about the many new possibilities for expanding their studio spaces. Our own Chris Bolitho and Thomas O'Connor manned the Vintage King booth, while also checking out some other exhibits at the convention. Read on to discover some of their personal highlights from Las Vegas and the NAB Show 2016.

Focusrite RedNet A8R and Rednet PCIeR

Focusrite has expanded their range of 1U Dante interfaces with the new Rednet A8R. A8R gives you eight channels of analog audio in and out on a standard DB25 connector, and two channels of AES/EBU on XLR connectors (Wordclock in and out are also provided). As with the other interfaces in the -R suffix line, this interface has redundant ethernet on locking ethercon connectors and redundant power with cable retaining harnesses. Focusrite also added the RedNet PCIeR card with second, redundant ethernet connection to their line-up.

Cedar Audio DNS 2

Our friends at Cedar Audio were demonstrating the new DNS 2 portable dialog noise suppressor. This rugged little brother to the stunning DNS 8 has two channels of noise reduction with both Analog (Mic / Line) and AES/EBU digital connections. Just like the DNS 8, background noise can be "learned" and then eliminated, along with excessive reverberation and unfavorable acoustics. The DNS 2 can be powered with its 12v connection and the crystal clear mic pre provides phantom power, eliminating the need to carry an additional pre/power supply. If you'd like to check out the DNS 2 contact us at Vintage King for a demo.

Avid Pro Tools 12.5 with Cloud Collaboration and NEXIS

Vintage King partners Avid made a splash before NAB with "Avid Connect," their glitzy customer association event, held this year at the Wynn. The two big announcements were Cloud Collaboration for Pro Tools and the new NEXIS shared storage system.

Pro Tools 12.5 is the software release that incorporates the first of the collaborative features Avid has been preparing us for the past couple of years. What does this mean? It means that it's now possible to nearly simultaneously work on the same project at the same time with someone in a different studio anywhere in the world running Pro Tools. You can share audio and MIDI tracks, edits and mix changes, and communicate with text chat.

All Pro Tools 12.5 users get 500MB space and 3 projects free, more storage and space can be purchased as needed. If you haven't already upgraded to the latest version of Pro Tools, collaboration is a great reason to do so - contact us at Vintage King to make sure you get on the right upgrade and support plan.

NEXIS is a software-defined storage appliance with virtualized storage. NEXIS allows studios to define and resize fast networked shared storage "workspaces" in real time. Data is redundantly protected and SSDs can be used to accelerate performance. Think lots of shareable fast drive space on your network that can be quickly allocated and resized, with built-in protection against hard drive failures and fast performance and you've got the concept. Vintage King's post and workflow experts can help you design a NEXIS system to suit your needs and budget.

Trinnov Audio D-Mon 6

Trinnov were exhibiting for the first time at NAB with Vintage King. The brand's monitor controllers integrate advanced acoustics correction giving a very accurate and customizable monitor reference sound even in highly compromised acoustic environments.

The D-Mon 6 is a 5.1 channel monitor controller with room correction and multiple control options was on display with a new ad-hoc wireless connection that makes set-up and control of the system with a computer, tablet or smartphone incredibly simple. An eight-channel configuration of the Trinnov MC Pro, with room correction and advanced loudness metering, was also being shown. Even on a busy trade show floor, the amount of detail, clarity separation that could be heard with Trinnov processing was very impressive. Many of the people we spoke with want to try Trinnov in their own rooms after hearing it at the show.

Focal Trio Speakers

Focal's recently introduced Trio speakers, now available with a beautiful red-wood finish, were on display at Vintage King's booth as the Left and Right components of a surround system with Solo 6 speakers and Sub6. These aggressively priced, great-sounding three-way speakers caused a lot of excitement. Like Focal's other speakers the designers seem to have found the right balance between accuracy and musicality - making a speaker that is great for reference and creative/pleasure listening.

Zaor

Zaor Studio furniture is now available in the USA through Vintage King Audio. We exhibited adjustable speaker stands, a rack and composer workstation at NAB. The response to this very affordable and customizable furniture was overwhelmingly positive and we're expecting a lot of studios to choose Zaor in the coming year.

AES 67

The biggest hold up on adoption of Audio over IP has been the scary prospect of purchasing and deploying and expensive system only to find that one of the other competing standards wins the format war. AES 67 was announced a couple of years ago promising interoperability between competing audio-over-IP systems, but this year at NAB representatives at Merging (who use Revenna), Focusrite (who use Dante) and Genelec (using AES 67) were all talking about it and showing devices communicating successfully. Several Vintage King clients in the post and education fields commented that they are now comfortable moving forward with Audio-over-IP systems now as a result.
