In honor of Bob Moog's legacy and the Bob Moog Foundation's continued mission of synth education, Moog is releasing a limited run of the Bob Moog Tribute Edition Minimoog Model D. This synth is limited to only 500 units, and $500 from each instrument will be donated to the Bob Moog Foundation.
This edition of the Model D retains the synth’s classic sound engine and 100% analog circuitry, pairing it with a new white oak cabinet and the same modern functional updates introduced in the brand’s 2022 reissue. These features include MIDI integration, dedicated analog LFO with triangle and square waveshapes, a premium Fatar keybed with velocity and aftertouch, mixer feedback modification, and a spring-loaded pitch wheel.
In our new Fresh Listen video, we're exploring the world of the Bob Moog Tribute Edition Minimoog Model D. Watch below to hear performances by Antonio Manzari as he uses the synthesizer to create esoteric and atmospheric sounds.
With the advent of synthesizers, sonic explorers could traverse new worlds and build entirely new landscapes with electronic sound. Yet most early experimenters worked in universities, major recording studios, and radio stations, as the tools remained largely inaccessible to the public until the release of the Moog Minimoog Model D.
The Model D was the fourth revision of a synthesizer originally conceptualized by Moog’s head engineer, Bill Hemsath. On his lunch breaks, Bill borrowed popular modules from the much larger modular systems and a keyboard from a pile of scraps, setting the template for the modern synthesizer.
"My office was up on the second floor, and I was next to the graveyard, and that's where Bob [Moog] tossed stuff that was junk, but maybe we could use it someday," Bill stated in an interview with Moog in 2011. "There was a five-octave keyboard, but he would steal key caps off the treble end for replacing chipped and broken ones. The number of remaining key caps determined the size of the keyboard. It turned out to be three octaves. So I hacksawed that down. I took an upper console, cut it down to match, and with a little bit of fudging, I could get about a half dozen modules in it."
After a few more revisions of the Minimoog throughout 1969, Bob, Bill, and the rest of the Moog team landed on the layout, sound, and form factor of the Model D. It gave musicians access to an instrument that was immediately playable without patch cables and far more mobile than the hulking rigs that came before it.
The Minimoog Model D remains a staple of the studio and touring set-ups with artists of all genres using it to create textures, bass sounds, and lead lines. When you think of the Model D, you think Sun Ra, Yes, Stevie Wonder, Parliament, Herbie Hancock, Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, ABBA, Gary Numan, Rush, and countless others.
