The Neumann Large Badge U47 is a true legend. This early variation of the large-diaphragm condenser microphone was produced only between 1949 and 1950, with just a few hundred ever made. Revered for its stunning presence and remarkable three-dimensional sound, it remains one of the most coveted microphones in history.
Vintage King's admiration for the iconic Neumann Large Badge U47 inspired us to collaborate with Andreas Grosser's Elektronik Service to create a faithful modern reproduction of this legendary microphone. Built from original Neumann schematics, the Vintage King Large Badge U47 features a VF14ER tube, a Siegfried Thiersch Mylar M7 capsule, and a custom HAUFE GN107 transformer. By meticulously recreating its look, feel, and sound, Vintage King has revived this rare and celebrated microphone for a new generation of artists, engineers, and producers.
In our latest Vintage King Shootout, we’re heading to the Plymouth Rock Recording Company in Plymouth, Michigan, to put the Vintage King Large Badge U47 up against a vintage Neumann Large Badge U47. You’ll hear the two microphones compared on vocals (Ashlee Moss), acoustic and electric bass (Takashi Iio), electric and acoustic guitar (Ryan McGuire), saxophone (Haruki Hakoyama), and drums (Amir Edwards).
