Upon first glance at the Focal Shape series, the general look has changed from the brand's classic CMS line. This comes by way of walnut veneer over the monitor's MDF cabinets, which pairs well with the line's brand new flax cones. As a result of Focal's push to better the cones in their monitors, these components have been composed of glass and flax fibres to provide impeccable dampening, in addition to being light as possible.
Another piece of new technology that Focal is using within the Shape line is the brand's TMD Surround. The basic principle of TMD Surround according to Focal is "to optimize harmonic absorption to ensure a piston-like action for the whole audio spectrum reproduced." By using two rings in the surround construction, Focal ensures they are providing a linear frequency response curve between 1 and 2kHz, while also reducing distortion.
Elsewhere in the Shape series, Focal has brought on-board their latest tweeter design, the same one that is utilized in the SM6 and SM9 monitors. This inverted "M'-shaped dome allows for less for distortion and more flexibility when listening from anywhere in your mix room or recording studio.
In terms of flexibility, Focal has gone to great lengths to ensure that these nearfield monitors can be tailored specifically to your listening space. Each of the monitors in the Shape line features a shelving filter for low and high frequencies and a crossover that allows you to fix any reflections due to vibrations from console or room noise. Read on to discover more about the specifics of each monitor in the Shape line and head here to pre-order any of these new speakers.
