For nearly 50 years, Harrison Audio has played a defining role in shaping the sound of popular music. And while Harrison never truly left the studio world, they’ve recently made a triumphant return to the spotlight with a new wave of gear that brings their legendary analog tone into modern workflows.
The latest addition to the lineup of revivals is the 32Classic MS Mixstrip, a high-performance, all-analog channel strip that distills the essence of their flagship 32Classic console into a single 19" rack unit. We recently invited Steve Stout (ØZWALD, Lifehouse) to the Vintage King Nashville showroom to track a new song and put the 32Classic MS Mixstrip through its paces, along with the brand’s 32Cpre+ preamp, MR3eq equalizer, and Comp compressor.
In our latest First Listen video, you’ll see how the Mixstrip and 500 Series modules fit into a full Harrison signal chain, from initial tracking to final mixdown. But first, let’s take a closer look at what each piece of gear brings to the session.
The 32Classic MS Mixstrip brings the essential elements of a Harrison console into a single, powerful unit. It all starts with the mic preamp, based on the same Jensen transformer-coupled design found in the original 3232 consoles.
Speaking of Harrison’s signature desk, fans of the 3232 will feel right at home with the Mixstrip’s filter and EQ sections. The Low Pass and High Pass filters use a musical 12 dB/octave slope, with the HPF featuring a signature 3 dB resonant peak that adds weight and character to the low end. The 4-band parametric EQ combines carefully selected frequency bands and proportional Q behavior, making it just as effective for broad tonal shaping as it is for surgical adjustments.
What really sets the 32Classic MS apart is its built-in mix section. Each unit includes a stereo mix bus with pan and level controls, allowing you to sum multiple Mixstrips together and build a sidecar or front-end recording rig tailored to your needs.
The 32Cpre+ brings Harrison's legendary preamp design to the popular 500 Series format. Built around the same Jensen JT-MB-CPCA transformer found in Harrison's flagship consoles, the 32Cpre+ delivers Harrison’s signature sound in a compact, affordable package.
Beyond the preamp circuitry, the 32Cpre+ includes Harrison's signature high-pass and low-pass filters, offering the same musical 12 dB/octave slope found on both the original 3232 and current 32Classic consoles.
Pulled from the beloved MR3 console, the MR3eq 500 Series EQ delivers the same punchy, musical tone that graced countless ’70s and ’80s hits. It's 3-band parametric design offers shelves or bells on the high and low bands, plus a continuously variable midrange Q for surgical or broad strokes. The standalone HPF (with its signature 3 dB peak) adds air and clarity, making it ideal for tightening mixes or sweetening tracks on the way in.
Dave Harrison may have been hesitant about compressors, but the Harrison Comp proves the brand nailed it. This feed-forward VCA compressor uses a THAT 2180 chip for ultra-transparent leveling or aggressive character, with a program-dependent attack that adapts to your source.
This intelligent attack response eliminates the guesswork typically associated with compression, while simple controls for Threshold, Ratio, Makeup, and Release make it easy to manually dial in a wide range of sounds.
